About Lost Creek

Lost Creek State Park encompasses 25 acres in a dramatic limestone canyon near Anaconda in Deer Lodge County. The park features towering 1,200-foot limestone cliffs, a seasonal waterfall, and one of Montana's most spectacular narrow canyon settings.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The canyon cliffs provide nesting habitat for mountain goats, which are frequently seen on the cliff faces. Bighorn sheep also occur in the area. Raptors nest on the cliff ledges, and the creek supports small trout.

Flora Ecosystems

Douglas fir and limber pine grow on the canyon slopes and rim. The canyon floor supports riparian vegetation along Lost Creek. The varied aspects and elevations create diverse microhabitats within the small park.

Geology

The canyon is carved through massive Madison Limestone of Mississippian age. The 1,200-foot cliffs are among the most dramatic in Montana. Lost Creek disappears underground through the limestone before emerging downstream, giving the creek its name.

Climate And Weather

The canyon creates cool microclimates even in summer. The Deer Lodge Valley experiences cold winters and warm summers. The canyon provides some shelter from wind and extremes.

Human History

The dramatic canyon has attracted visitors for over a century. The Anaconda area was central to Montana's copper smelting industry, with the canyon providing a natural contrast to the industrial landscape.

Park History

Lost Creek State Park was established to preserve the spectacular canyon and provide public access to this geological wonder near Anaconda.

Major Trails And Attractions

The dramatic canyon walls are the primary attraction. A trail follows the creek into the canyon where mountain goats are frequently visible on the cliffs. A seasonal waterfall adds scenic interest. Photography of the canyon and wildlife is popular.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park offers 25 campsites, picnic areas, and a trail into the canyon. It is located about 6 miles east of Anaconda via Highway 1 and a county road.

Conservation And Sustainability

The park protects the canyon's geological and ecological features. Mountain goat habitat is maintained by limiting disturbance to cliff areas. The canyon represents an important geological feature in the region.
