About Logan

Logan State Park encompasses 36 acres on the west shore of Middle Thompson Lake in Lincoln County, in the scenic lake country of northwestern Montana. The park provides lakeside camping and fishing surrounded by dense forests and mountain scenery.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Middle Thompson Lake supports rainbow trout, bull trout, and kokanee salmon. Loons and ospreys frequent the lake. Black bears, moose, and white-tailed deer inhabit the dense surrounding forests. Bald eagles are seen year-round.

Flora Ecosystems

Dense forests of Douglas fir, western red cedar, and western larch surround the lake. The rich understory includes huckleberry, thimbleberry, and ferns. This Pacific Northwest-influenced forest is among Montana's most lush.

Geology

The Thompson Lakes chain occupies a glacially carved valley in the Cabinet Mountains. The lakes were formed when glacial moraines dammed the valleys. The surrounding mountains consist of Belt Supergroup metamorphic rocks.

Climate And Weather

Northwestern Montana receives the highest precipitation in the state, exceeding 30 inches annually. Winters are cold and snowy, while summers are mild and pleasant. The Pacific maritime influence moderates temperatures.

Human History

The Thompson Lakes area has been utilized by Kootenai and Salish peoples. Logging and mining were historically significant industries in Lincoln County.

Logan State Park was established to provide public access to the scenic Thompson Lakes chain in northwestern Montana's lake country.

Major Trails And Attractions

Fishing for trout and kokanee is the primary activity. Swimming and non-motorized boating provide summer recreation. The forested lakeside setting offers peaceful camping.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park offers 45 campsites, a boat ramp, and day-use facilities. It is located on Highway 2, about 45 miles west of Kalispell in Lincoln County.

Conservation And Sustainability

The park protects lakeshore habitat on the Thompson Lakes. Bull trout conservation is a priority in these waters, as the species is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
