Flora Ecosystems

Mixed oak-pine forest typical of northeastern Massachusetts predominates, with white pine, red oak, and red maple. The ponds support diverse aquatic vegetation. Mountain laurel blooms profusely in June.

Geology

The forest occupies glacial deposits over granite and related igneous bedrock. Numerous kettle ponds formed by melting ice blocks. The rolling terrain reflects glacial modification.

Climate And Weather

The inland location produces warm summers averaging 82°F and cold winters averaging 28°F with moderate snowfall. The ponds moderate local temperature extremes.

Human History

Indigenous peoples utilized this area before European colonization. Colonial farmers cleared portions for agriculture. Harold Parker was a Boston-area businessman who advocated for public forest preservation.

Park History
