About Fort Owen

Fort Owen State Park preserves the ruins of the first permanent white settlement in Montana, located in Ravalli County near Stevensville in the Bitterroot Valley. The fort was established in 1850 and played a key role in Montana's early settlement history.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The Bitterroot Valley supports white-tailed deer, various raptors, and diverse songbirds. The park's open and semi-wooded setting attracts ground-foraging birds. The nearby Bitterroot River provides fish and wildlife habitat.

Flora Ecosystems

The park sits in the Bitterroot Valley's grassland-forest transition. Cottonwoods shade portions of the site. Native bunchgrasses and wildflowers grow in open areas. Ponderosa pines dot the surrounding landscape.

Geology

The Bitterroot Valley is a major north-south trending valley formed by faulting along the Bitterroot Range. The valley floor is covered with glacial and alluvial deposits. The towering Bitterroot Mountains rise dramatically to the west.

Climate And Weather

The Bitterroot Valley experiences cold winters and warm, dry summers. Annual precipitation averages about 13 inches. The valley's north-south orientation channels winds and allows cold air drainage in winter.

Human History

Major John Owen purchased the former St. Mary's Mission from Jesuits in 1850 and established a trading post. The fort became a crucial supply point for early settlers, miners, and military in western Montana.

Park History

Fort Owen State Park was established to preserve the archaeological and historical remains of Montana's first permanent non-Native settlement. The park interprets the fur trade and early settlement era.

Major Trails And Attractions

Ruins of the fort's structures are the primary attraction. Interpretive signs explain the fort's history and significance. A small museum displays artifacts from the site. The Bitterroot Mountain views add scenic value.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park provides a day-use area with interpretive displays and picnic facilities. It is located about 1 mile east of Stevensville on Secondary Highway 269.

Conservation And Sustainability

Archaeological preservation protects the fort's remaining structures and buried artifacts. The site is maintained as an important heritage resource documenting Montana's earliest permanent settlement.
