About Flathead Lake

Flathead Lake State Park encompasses six separate units totaling over 200 acres along the shores of Flathead Lake in Lake and Flathead counties. The park provides access to the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, covering 191 square miles with crystal-clear waters.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Flathead Lake supports lake trout, bull trout, yellow perch, lake whitefish, and westslope cutthroat trout. Bald eagles and ospreys nest along the shoreline. Common loons, mergansers, and other waterbirds frequent the lake. Grizzly bears occasionally visit lakeside areas.

Flora Ecosystems

The lake's western shore features ponderosa pine forests while the eastern shore includes cherry orchards benefiting from the lake's moderating climate. Douglas fir grows at higher elevations. Native bunchgrasses and wildflowers cover open areas.

Geology

Flathead Lake was carved by massive glaciers during the Pleistocene ice ages that filled the Rocky Mountain Trench. The lake reaches depths of 370 feet and its clarity allows visibility of 30 feet or more. The surrounding mountains include the Mission Range and Swan Range.

Climate And Weather

The lake significantly moderates the local climate, creating Montana's mildest weather zone. Winters are relatively mild and summers pleasant. The lake effect supports cherry agriculture. Annual precipitation varies from 15 to 20 inches.

Human History

Flathead Lake has been central to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes for thousands of years. The lake provides fishing, gathering, and cultural resources. European settlement brought steamboat transportation and agriculture.

Park History

Flathead Lake State Park was established with multiple units to provide public access around this enormous lake. The six units offer different recreation experiences from different shores and vantage points.

Major Trails And Attractions

Swimming, boating, and fishing are premier activities. The lake's clarity and mountain backdrop create spectacular scenery. Each unit offers different perspectives of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The six units provide camping, boat launches, swimming areas, and day-use facilities at various locations around the lake. The park is accessed from Highway 93 and Highway 35 around the lake.

Conservation And Sustainability

Protecting Flathead Lake's exceptional water clarity is a top priority. Invasive species prevention, particularly against zebra and quagga mussels, involves watercraft inspection stations around the lake.
