About Clark's Lookout

Clark's Lookout State Park preserves a prominent rocky outcrop along the Beaverhead River near Dillon in Beaverhead County. Captain William Clark climbed this point on August 13, 1805, to survey the surrounding terrain during the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The Beaverhead River supports brown trout and rainbow trout. Mule deer and pronghorn inhabit the sagebrush terrain. Raptors including red-tailed hawks and prairie falcons hunt from elevated perches in the area.

Flora Ecosystems

Sagebrush and native bunchgrasses dominate the dry uplands. Cottonwoods and willows line the Beaverhead River below the lookout. Limber pines cling to the rocky outcrop, and wildflowers bloom in spring.

Geology

The lookout point is a prominent rock outcrop of Paleozoic limestone rising above the Beaverhead River valley. The surrounding terrain was shaped by faulting and erosion, creating the elevated vantage point Clark used.

Climate And Weather

The Beaverhead Valley is one of Montana's coldest areas, with winter temperatures frequently dropping well below zero. Summers are warm and dry with cool nights. Annual precipitation averages about 10 inches.
