About Chief Plenty Coups

Chief Plenty Coups State Park encompasses 195 acres near Pryor in Big Horn County, preserving the home and sacred spring of the last traditional chief of the Crow Nation. The park is both a state park and a National Historic Landmark honoring Plenty Coups' vision and leadership.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The park's varied habitats support white-tailed deer, cottontail rabbits, and diverse songbirds. The spring-fed creek attracts wildlife year-round. Raptors hunt the surrounding grasslands, and the creek supports small aquatic species.

Flora Ecosystems

The sacred spring feeds a cottonwood-lined creek that creates a green oasis in the surrounding prairie. Native grasses and sagebrush cover the uplands. Plenty Coups planted fruit trees that still survive, blending cultivated and wild landscapes.

Geology

The park sits at the edge of the Pryor Mountains where they meet the plains. The sacred spring emerges from limestone formations, providing year-round water flow. The Pryor Mountains consist of uplifted Paleozoic sedimentary rocks.

Climate And Weather

The area south of Billings experiences warm summers and cold winters with moderate precipitation. Annual rainfall averages about 14 inches. The Pryor Mountain foothills receive slightly more moisture than the surrounding plains.

Human History

Chief Plenty Coups (1848-1932) was the last traditional chief of the Apsaalooke (Crow) people. He received a vision at the sacred spring as a young man that guided his leadership strategy of cooperation rather than armed resistance during the settlement era.

Park History

Before his death, Plenty Coups donated his home and surrounding land as a park for all people. The site became a state park and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1999.

Major Trails And Attractions

The chief's log home and store are preserved. The sacred spring remains a place of spiritual significance. A museum interprets Crow culture and Plenty Coups' life. Walking trails explore the grounds and creek.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park offers a museum, picnic areas, and interpretive trails. It is located about 1 mile west of Pryor, approximately 35 miles south of Billings via Highway 416.

Conservation And Sustainability

The park preserves both cultural and natural heritage. The sacred spring and its surrounding landscape are managed to maintain their spiritual and ecological significance for the Crow people.
