About Chester-Blandford

Chester-Blandford State Forest encompasses 2,553 acres of rugged woodland straddling the Blandford-Chester town line in the Berkshire foothills of western Massachusetts. The forest protects headwater streams, mature forests, and scenic waterfalls while providing recreation opportunities in one of the most sparsely populated regions of southern New England.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The large forest block supports black bear, moose, fisher, and bobcat in healthy populations. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, and ruffed grouse are abundant. The varied habitats including wetlands, mature forest, and rocky outcrops support diverse breeding bird populations including wood thrush, scarlet tanager, and various warblers.

Flora Ecosystems

Northern hardwood forests of sugar maple, American beech, and yellow birch dominate at higher elevations, transitioning to mixed oak-hardwood communities on lower slopes. Hemlock groves persist in cool ravines near streams. The forest contains old-growth character trees and supports diverse understory communities including ferns and woodland wildflowers.

Geology

The forest occupies metamorphic terrain of the Berkshire highlands, with bedrock of schist and gneiss representing ancient sediments transformed by heat and pressure. Sanderson Brook Falls cascades over resistant rock layers, creating a scenic attraction. Glacial erratics scattered throughout the forest were transported by the continental ice sheet.

Climate And Weather

The elevated location produces a cooler, more northern climate than lowland Massachusetts, with summer temperatures averaging 75°F and winter temperatures regularly dropping below zero. Heavy snowfall accumulates in the forest, supporting winter recreation. Annual precipitation exceeds 50 inches due to orographic lifting.

Human History

The Pocumtuc people utilized these highlands before European colonization. Colonial settlement brought marginal farming to the steep terrain, but most agricultural use was abandoned by the early 20th century as populations moved to more productive lands. Charcoal production and logging supported regional iron furnaces during the industrial era.

Park History

The state acquired land for Chester-Blandford State Forest beginning in the 1920s, assembling holdings from abandoned farms and cutover timber lands. Civilian Conservation Corps workers developed roads, trails, and fire infrastructure during the 1930s. The forest continues to provide multiple benefits including recreation, timber, and watershed protection.

Major Trails And Attractions

Sanderson Brook Falls, a scenic 80-foot cascade, serves as the primary attraction accessible via a moderate hiking trail. Additional trails traverse varied terrain suitable for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Winter activities include snowmobiling on designated trails and cross-country skiing. The forest is popular for hunting during appropriate seasons.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Limited facilities include parking areas at forest entrances and trailheads. No restrooms or developed recreation areas exist. The forest is accessible via Route 20 and local roads in Chester and Blandford. The remote location requires travel through rural western Massachusetts.

Conservation And Sustainability

Active forest management maintains forest health and diverse age classes through sustainable timber harvest. The forest protects headwater streams feeding the Westfield River, an important recreational and drinking water resource. Wildlife habitat management maintains early successional areas benefiting game species and songbirds.
