About Ackley Lake

Ackley Lake State Park encompasses 160 acres around a 450-acre reservoir nestled in the foothills of the Little Belt Mountains in Judith Basin County. The park provides fishing, camping, and boating in a scenic central Montana setting with views of surrounding mountain ranges.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The reservoir supports rainbow trout and brown trout along with warm-water species. Mule deer and white-tailed deer frequent the surrounding grasslands and coulees. Raptors including red-tailed hawks hunt the open terrain, and waterfowl congregate on the lake during migration seasons.

Flora Ecosystems

The park sits in the transition zone between prairie grasslands and mountain foothills. Native bunchgrasses and sagebrush dominate the uplands, while cottonwoods and willows line seasonal drainages. Wildflowers including lupine and balsamroot bloom in spring and early summer.

Geology

Ackley Lake was created by an earthen dam on Cottonwood Creek. The surrounding terrain features rolling foothills of the Little Belt Mountains with exposed sedimentary formations. The area lies within the central Montana plains-to-mountains transition zone.

Climate And Weather

Central Montana produces warm, dry summers and cold winters with significant temperature swings. Annual precipitation averages about 14 inches. Strong winds are common across the open terrain, and the lake can freeze by late November.

Human History

The Judith Basin was historically home to various Native American peoples and later became prime cattle ranching territory. The area was central to Montana's open-range cattle era in the 1880s.

Park History

Ackley Lake State Park was developed around the irrigation reservoir to provide recreation in the sparsely populated Judith Basin region of central Montana.

Major Trails And Attractions

Fishing for trout is the primary draw, with both shore and boat angling available. A concrete boat ramp provides lake access. Camping and picnicking serve visitors, and the mountain backdrop provides scenic value.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park offers 23 campsites, a boat ramp, and day-use facilities. It is located about 5 miles southwest of Hobson off Highway 400 in Judith Basin County.

Conservation And Sustainability

Water level management balances irrigation needs with recreation. The park provides important public access to outdoor recreation in an area dominated by private ranch land.
