About Wygant

Wygant State Natural Area is a forested preserve located in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge in Hood River County, Oregon. The park protects a steep, heavily forested slope that rises from the gorge floor to the basalt cliffs above, offering stunning views of the Columbia River and the surrounding gorge landscape. The natural area is named for a pioneer family and provides a relatively uncrowded hiking experience in one of the most scenic sections of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Wygant State Natural Area supports wildlife species adapted to the Columbia River Gorge's unique ecological conditions. Black-tailed deer and Roosevelt elk move through the forested slopes. Black bears are present but rarely seen. The park's mature forest provides habitat for northern spotted owls and pileated woodpeckers. Peregrine falcons nest on the basalt cliffs above the trail, and golden eagles are occasionally spotted soaring on thermals above the gorge. The diverse bird community includes hermit thrushes, Townsend's warblers, and Pacific-slope flycatchers in the forest interior.

Flora Ecosystems

The flora of Wygant reflects the transition from the wet western end of the Columbia River Gorge to the drier eastern sections. Douglas-fir and western hemlock dominate the canopy, with bigleaf maple and Pacific madrone on sunnier slopes. The understory includes Oregon grape, salal, and oceanspray. The park is particularly notable for its spring wildflower displays, including several species endemic to the Columbia River Gorge. Wildflowers include larkspur, paintbrush, balsamroot, and the rare Barrett's penstemon, which is found only in the gorge. Mosses and ferns carpet the forest floor on the shaded north-facing slopes.

Geology

Wygant State Natural Area showcases the dramatic geology of the Columbia River Gorge, including massive basalt flows of the Columbia River Basalt Group, which erupted from fissures in eastern Washington and Oregon between 17 and 6 million years ago. These flows, which can be seen in the cliff faces above the trail, traveled hundreds of miles from their source and filled the ancestral Columbia River valley to great depths. The Missoula Floods of the late Pleistocene, caused by the catastrophic draining of glacial Lake Missoula, carved the gorge to its current dramatic proportions, exposing the layered basalt formations visible today.

Climate And Weather

The climate at Wygant reflects its position in the Columbia River Gorge, which serves as the only sea-level passage through the Cascade Range. The park experiences a transitional climate between the wet conditions of the western gorge and the dry conditions to the east. Annual precipitation is approximately 40-50 inches, decreasing rapidly eastward. The gorge is famous for its powerful winds, which funnel through the narrow passage and can create challenging conditions for hikers. Summers are warm with temperatures in the 80s, while winters are cool and wet. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable hiking conditions.

Human History

The Columbia River Gorge has been a vital transportation and trade corridor for indigenous peoples for over 10,000 years. The Wasco, Wishram, and other Chinookan peoples established fishing villages and trade centers along the Columbia River, with Celilo Falls serving as one of the greatest gathering and trading sites in North America. The gorge later became the route of the Oregon Trail, and the area near Wygant was traveled by pioneers making the difficult passage along the river. The construction of the Historic Columbia River Highway in the early 20th century opened the gorge to automobile tourism.

Park History

Wygant State Natural Area was established to protect a significant tract of native forest and the scenic viewpoints along the Columbia River Gorge. The property was named for the Wygant family, early settlers in the area. The park is managed by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department in coordination with the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, which was established by Congress in 1986 to protect the gorge's scenic, natural, cultural, and recreational resources. The natural area designation emphasizes ecological preservation over developed recreation.

Major Trails And Attractions

The Wygant Trail is the park's primary attraction, climbing steeply through dense forest to a dramatic viewpoint on the basalt cliffs overlooking the Columbia River. The trail gains approximately 1,000 feet of elevation over about 2 miles, offering a challenging but rewarding hike. From the summit, hikers enjoy panoramic views of the gorge, including the river, surrounding cliffs, and the volcanic peaks of Mount Hood and Mount Adams. The spring wildflower season draws botanists and nature lovers to see gorge-endemic species. The trail connects to the broader gorge trail system including the Perham Creek Trail.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Wygant State Natural Area is accessed from a trailhead along the Historic Columbia River Highway between Viento State Park and Mitchell Point in the Columbia River Gorge. Parking is limited to a small pullout area, and there are no restroom or picnic facilities at the trailhead. The trail is best suited for experienced hikers due to its steep grade and narrow sections. Nearby Viento State Park offers camping, and the town of Hood River, approximately 10 miles to the east, provides full visitor services including lodging, restaurants, and outdoor recreation outfitters. The trailhead is typically accessible from spring through fall.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation at Wygant focuses on protecting the native forest ecosystem and the gorge-endemic plant species found within the natural area. The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area provides an overarching framework for resource protection throughout the gorge. Invasive plants, particularly scotch broom and Himalayan blackberry, pose ongoing threats and require active management. The steep terrain makes the area susceptible to erosion, and trail maintenance is important to prevent soil loss. Climate change concerns include increased wildfire risk, as demonstrated by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire that burned thousands of acres in the gorge.
