About Chilkat Islands

Chilkat Islands State Marine Park protects a group of islands in Lynn Canal near the community of Haines in northern Southeast Alaska. The marine park encompasses several small islands that provide anchorage and shore access in the scenic fjord. The park lies near the famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, adding to the area's wildlife viewing opportunities.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Lynn Canal supports diverse marine wildlife including humpback whales, orcas, harbor seals, and sea lions. The nearby Chilkat River hosts the world's largest gathering of bald eagles each fall. Harbor seals haul out on island shores while sea otters raft in protected waters. Salmon runs through the area attract marine predators.

Flora Ecosystems

The islands display typical northern Southeast Alaska vegetation with Sitka spruce and western hemlock forest in protected areas. The climate transition to interior conditions allows some continental plant species to mix with coastal rainforest vegetation. Beach vegetation includes hardy plants adapted to salt spray.

Geology

Lynn Canal is a deep glacially-carved fjord penetrating far into the Coast Mountains. The islands represent remnants of larger landmasses carved by glacial ice. The surrounding peaks expose metamorphic and granitic rocks uplifted along the active plate boundary. Glaciers remain visible on higher slopes.

Climate And Weather

Northern Southeast Alaska experiences a transition between mild maritime and harsh interior climates. Winters can bring cold snaps from the interior while summers are mild. The fjord channels wind, creating breezy conditions. Precipitation is moderate by Southeast standards, around 50 inches annually.

Human History

Tlingit peoples have inhabited the Chilkat region for thousands of years, with the area serving as a center of their civilization. Chilkat blankets, one of the world's most valued textile traditions, originated here. European contact and American settlement added new layers of history while Tlingit culture has remained strong.

Park History

Chilkat Islands State Marine Park was established to provide marine recreation opportunities near Haines. The park offers accessible island camping and anchorage in the scenic Lynn Canal. Its proximity to the famed eagle preserve adds to the area's attraction for wildlife enthusiasts.

Major Trails And Attractions

Island camping and exploration are primary activities, with opportunities to experience the unique northern Southeast Alaska environment. Wildlife viewing is exceptional, particularly for eagles during the fall concentration. Kayaking among the islands offers intimate exploration. The park provides a base for exploring the greater Haines area.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The marine park is accessible by boat or kayak from Haines. Primitive camping is available on the islands. Haines is served by the Alaska Marine Highway and has a small airport with connections to Juneau. The town provides full services and serves as a gateway to the Yukon via the Haines Highway.

Conservation And Sustainability

The marine park protects island environments while allowing recreation access. The park's proximity to the eagle preserve emphasizes the importance of protecting the entire ecosystem. Sustainable tourism practices help maintain the area's natural values that attract visitors.
