About Independence Path

Independence Path Historical Nature Park is located in Kastamonu Province on Turkey Black Sea coast, commemorating the historic supply route used during the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1922) to transport ammunition and supplies from the port of İnebolu to the interior. The park preserves the mountain path along which thousands of villagers, particularly women, carried military supplies on their backs over the steep Küre Mountains to support the independence struggle. It combines patriotic memorial significance with the preservation of one of Turkey most pristine mountain forest environments.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The Küre Mountains through which the path passes support diverse wildlife including brown bears, wolves, lynx, roe deer, and wild boar in the extensive unbroken forest. The mature forest provides habitat for rare bird species including black woodpeckers, imperial eagles, and various owl species dependent on old-growth conditions. Streams along the route support brown trout and diverse aquatic communities. The area exceptional forest continuity makes it one of the most important wildlife corridors in northern Turkey.

Flora Ecosystems

The park traverses some of the finest remaining Caucasian-Colchic temperate forest in Turkey, with ancient beech, fir, spruce, and chestnut trees forming dense canopy. The extraordinary moisture levels support luxuriant growth of mosses, ferns, and climbing plants that drape the forest interior. Endemic plant species occur throughout the altitudinal range of the path, particularly in the specialized environments of cliffs and stream valleys. The forest botanical diversity reflects millions of years of refugial status during ice ages when species survived in this mild coastal mountain zone.

Geology

The path crosses the Küre Mountains, composed of ancient metamorphic and sedimentary rocks including schists, quartzites, and limestones that form one of the oldest geological units in northern Turkey. The mountain terrain was shaped by stream erosion cutting deep valleys through the resistant rocks, creating the steep slopes that made the supply route so challenging. Mineral deposits in the region include copper and other metals that attracted historical mining activity. The geological complexity creates varied soil conditions supporting the exceptional forest diversity.

Climate And Weather

The Black Sea side of the Küre Mountains receives extremely high rainfall, with annual precipitation exceeding 1,500 millimeters on exposed slopes facing moisture-laden maritime air. Fog and cloud cover are frequent as air rises over the mountains, creating the moist conditions essential for the temperate rainforest ecosystem. Winter snow falls heavily above 1,000 meters, making the mountain path impassable for months. The route through these conditions during wartime operations demonstrated extraordinary human endurance against natural challenges.

Human History

During the Turkish War of Independence, the İnebolu-Ankara supply route through these mountains was a lifeline for nationalist forces fighting against occupation. Women from Black Sea villages carried artillery shells, rifles, and supplies weighing 50-70 kilograms over mountain paths that took several days to traverse. This heroic effort, occurring from 1919-1922, involved thousands of civilians and became a symbol of popular resistance. The path is considered sacred in Turkish national memory, with İnebolu and Kastamonu celebrated as heroes of the independence struggle.

Park History

The path was designated as a historical nature park to honor the sacrifices of those who carried supplies during the independence war while simultaneously protecting the exceptional mountain forest through which the route passes. The dual designation recognizes that the historical significance and the natural environment are inseparable. Trail restoration and maintenance has made sections of the original supply route accessible to modern visitors as a memorial walking path. The park forms part of the broader Küre Mountains protected area system.

Major Trails And Attractions

The restored historical path allows visitors to walk sections of the original supply route through pristine mountain forest, experiencing both the natural beauty and the physical challenge that supply carriers faced. Memorial markers and informational displays along the route explain the historical events and the individuals who made the journey. The forest scenery provides one of Turkey finest long-distance walking experiences through unbroken temperate rainforest. Cultural performances and commemorative events are held annually along the path.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The path extends between İnebolu on the Black Sea coast and the interior, with various sections accessible from different points along its length. Some sections require multi-day walking with camping, while others offer shorter day-hike opportunities. The best hiking season extends from May through October when snow has cleared from the mountain sections. Basic accommodation is available in villages along the route, with the town of İnebolu serving as a primary starting point.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation of the surrounding forest is essential to maintaining the historical landscape that the supply carriers traversed. The Küre Mountains old-growth forest is of European conservation significance and is protected through multiple overlapping designations. Trail maintenance prevents erosion along the walking route while the broader forest management prevents any logging or development. The historical and ecological values reinforce each other, as preserving the natural landscape also preserves the memorial integrity of the independence path.
