About El Feidja

El Feidja National Park is located in Jendouba Governorate in northwestern Tunisia, on the slopes of the Kroumirie mountain range near the Algerian border. Covering approximately 2,632 hectares, it is one of Tunisia's most forested national parks, protecting significant stands of cork oak and Zeen oak forest that represent the last substantial deciduous broadleaf forest in the country. The park is designated an Important Bird Area and harbours several species at the eastern limit of their western Mediterranean range.

Wildlife Ecosystems

El Feidja is one of Tunisia's most important parks for forest-dependent wildlife. Barbary red deer (Cervus elaphus barbarus), the only wild deer species in Africa, was successfully reintroduced here and now supports a growing population that is the foundation for future restoration efforts across Tunisia. Wild boar are abundant. Barbary macaque, though less common than in Chambi, is present in the cork oak forest. The bird fauna includes Levaillant's woodpecker, short-toed treecreeper, Corsican nuthatch (absent), and various forest warblers. Genet, stone marten, and red fox are the primary carnivores.

Flora Ecosystems

The park's forests represent the finest remaining example of the Zeen oak and cork oak biome in Tunisia. Quercus canariensis (Zeen oak) forms the dominant canopy on moist north-facing slopes, accompanied by strawberry tree, Phillyrea, and Viburnum tinus in the understorey. Cork oak dominates on drier ridges. A rich ground flora includes wild cyclamen, Anemone pavonina, and various bulbous plants beneath the oak canopy. Riparian corridors along park streams support alder, oleander, and lush fern communities. The park contains several endemic North African plant taxa.

Geology

El Feidja occupies the Kroumirie range, a subrange of the Tell Atlas mountains composed of Cretaceous and Paleogene flysch sediments. The flysch, a sequence of alternating mudstones and sandstones, weathers to produce acidic soils ideal for cork oak development. The rugged terrain is dissected by numerous wadis flowing toward the Medjerda River basin. The geological structure reflects the Atlas orogeny, with folded and thrust-faulted sequences creating the NE-SW trending ridges of the Kroumirie.

Climate And Weather

The park has a sub-humid Mediterranean climate, the second wettest in Tunisia after Jebel Chambi. Annual precipitation exceeds 1,000 mm on the higher ridges, with most falling between October and April. Summers are warm but not excessively hot (25-30°C), moderated by the dense forest cover. Winters are cool and frequently foggy. The high moisture levels sustain the deciduous forest and the rich ground flora that characterises this exceptional ecosystem.

Human History

The Kroumirie forests have been inhabited by Berber communities since antiquity, with the cork oak woodlands providing cork, acorns for pig fodder, and timber. The French colonial administration established forestry management of the Kroumirie, logging much of the original forest and introducing eucalyptus plantations in some areas. The Kroumirie region was a centre of resistance during the French invasion of 1881. Post-independence Tunisia continued forestry management of the region before establishing the national park.

Park History

El Feidja was designated a national park in 1990, recognizing both its exceptional forest ecosystem and its importance for the reintroduction of Barbary red deer, which had been extinct in Tunisia since the early 20th century. The deer reintroduction program, using animals from Algeria and European zoos, has been the park's most celebrated conservation success. The park is managed in cooperation with international conservation organisations for both deer management and botanical research. The cork oak forest is one of the best-studied forest ecosystems in Tunisia.

Major Trails And Attractions

Hiking through the oak forest is the primary activity, with marked trails offering opportunities to observe Barbary deer, Barbary macaque, and forest birds. The lush green forest landscape is striking in a predominantly arid country. Birdwatching is rewarding throughout the year. A visitor centre near the park entrance provides information on the deer reintroduction program. The nearby town of Ain Draham, at 800 metres elevation, is the centre of Tunisian mountain ecotourism and offers accommodation and local cuisine.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park is accessible from Ain Draham, a popular mountain resort town approximately 170 km from Tunis. Regular bus services connect Ain Draham to Tunis via Jendouba. The park entrance is a few kilometres from Ain Draham. Visitor facilities include marked trails and a visitor centre. Accommodation in Ain Draham ranges from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels. The best season is April through October; winter visits are possible but the mountain roads can be hazardous.

Conservation And Sustainability

El Feidja faces several conservation pressures including illegal logging, charcoal production, and grazing within the park boundaries. The Barbary deer population is vulnerable to poaching and disease. Climate-related drought stress on the oak forest has been observed in recent years. The park participates in a regional trans-boundary conservation initiative with the adjacent Algerian El Kala National Park, sharing wildlife populations including deer and macaques across the international border.
