About Shushensky Bor
Shushensky Bor National Park protects 39,180 hectares of diverse landscapes in Krasnoyarsk Krai, combining mountain taiga, steppe, and the shores of the Sayano-Shushenskaya Reservoir. [1] Established in 1995, the park preserves representative ecosystems of the Western Sayan foothills where forest and steppe biomes meet, creating high biodiversity within a compact accessible area.
Wildlife Ecosystems
Diverse fauna from both forest and steppe habitats including maral deer, roe deer, musk deer, elk, brown bear, lynx, sable, and numerous steppe and forest bird species. More than 270 bird species have been recorded, including golden eagle, osprey, and black stork, 27 of which are Red Data Book species. [1] The reservoir attracts migratory waterfowl. The ecotonal position between biomes creates unusually high species richness.
Flora Ecosystems
Pine forests on sandy terraces, dark taiga on mountain slopes, steppe communities on south-facing hillsides, and riparian forests along streams create a mosaic of vegetation types. More than 840 plant species have been recorded in the park, demonstrating the diversity created by biome overlap. [1]
Geology
The park spans the transition from the flat Minusinsk Basin to the Western Sayan foothills, with the mountain section dominated by the Borus Massif ridge. [1] Sandy terraces of the former Yenisei valley support pine forests. Mountain slopes expose Devonian volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The Sayano-Shushenskaya Reservoir created a new shoreline habitat. The highest point is Mount Poilovo at 2,309 meters.
Climate And Weather
Continental with warm summers (July approximately 20 degrees Celsius) and cold winters (January approximately minus 18 degrees Celsius). Low precipitation of 400–500 millimeters in the rain shadow of the Sayan mountains. The Sayano-Shushenskaya Reservoir moderates local temperatures.
Human History
The area is closely associated with the exile of Vladimir Lenin in 1897–1900 in the village of Shushenskoye. [1] Historical documentation of the natural landscapes around the settlement dates to this period. The Shushenskoye historical-ethnographic museum preserves records from this era.
Park History
Established 3 November 1995 to protect representative landscapes and provide recreation for the regional population. [1] The park comprises two separate sections: the Perovsky section in the forest-steppe zone (approximately 4,410 ha) and the Mountain section in the Western Sayan (approximately 34,760 ha). [1] The park combines nature conservation with accessible outdoor recreation.
