About Őrség

Őrség National Park, established in 2002, is Hungary's westernmost national park, situated in Vas County on the border with Slovenia and Austria. Covering approximately 440 square kilometres, the park protects the traditional cultural landscape of the Őrség region—a forested highland characterised by scattered hamlets, traditional farmsteads, water mills, and orchards set within a mosaic of oak-hornbeam forests, wet meadows, and stream valleys. The park represents one of Hungary's most intact historical rural landscapes, where centuries of small-scale farming have produced a rich biodiversity of cultural habitats.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Őrség's diverse mosaic of woodland, wet meadow, stream, and orchard habitats supports a rich fauna. Brown bears and wolves occasionally wander into the park from Slovenia, making it one of Hungary's only potential large predator areas. Otters are resident along the park's many streams. The extensive old orchards support remarkable invertebrate diversity, including stag beetles and other saproxylic beetles that depend on veteran fruit trees. Great grey shrikes winter on the open meadows. The park's streams hold populations of European crayfish, a native species threatened by invasive signal crayfish in many other areas.

Flora Ecosystems

The park's vegetation is dominated by oak-hornbeam woodland of Atlantic character, more closely resembling the forests of Slovenia and Austria than the continental forests of eastern Hungary. Lowland acidophilous oak forests characterise the sandy ridge tops, while alder carr and sedge communities occupy the moist valley bottoms. Traditional hay meadows, managed by late summer cutting without fertiliser, are particularly species-rich, harbouring many orchid species including marsh orchids, fragrant orchids, and butterfly orchids. The old orchards are botanical hotspots, combining ancient fruit tree varieties with diverse understorey wildflowers.

Geology

Őrség is underlain by Pliocene and Quaternary sediments of the Mura-Zala Depression, deposited by ancient rivers flowing from the Alps and Dinarides. The landscape is composed of alternating sandy ridges and clay-floored valleys, forming a washboard topography of gentle hills between 260 and 380 metres elevation. The sandy soils are acidic and nutrient-poor, favouring heather, bilberry, and acid-tolerant grasses on ridge tops. Valley floors are impeded by clay layers that create waterlogging, supporting mire and fen communities. No spectacular geological features are present, but the geological setting creates the characteristic ecological diversity of the park.

Climate And Weather

Őrség benefits from a more Atlantic climate than the rest of Hungary, receiving higher rainfall and experiencing milder winters due to its proximity to the Alps. Annual precipitation exceeds 800 millimetres, significantly above the Hungarian average, and is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year. Winters are cool and cloudy, with January averages around 0°C, and spring comes later than in eastern Hungary. Summers are warm but less extreme than on the Great Plain, with July averages of 19–20°C. Autumn can be misty and atmospheric, enhancing the appeal of the forested landscape for hiking.

Human History

The name Őrség—literally 'the land of guardians'—derives from the system of border guards (őrök) settled here by medieval Hungarian kings to patrol the western frontier. These guard communities received special privileges in exchange for military service and were settled in dispersed farmstead hamlets rather than nucleated villages. This distinctive settlement pattern—where individual farmsteads are separated from each other by fields, orchards, and woodland—persisted for centuries and gave the Őrség landscape its unique character. Traditional crafts including weaving, pottery, and wood carving survived in the region through the 20th century.

Park History

Őrség was first recognised as a protected landscape area in 1978, acknowledging the exceptional value of its traditional cultural landscape and biodiversity. It was elevated to national park status in 2002, becoming Hungary's tenth and most recently established national park. The park forms part of the Raab-Örseg-Goricko Landscape Nature Park, a trilateral cross-border protected area with Austria and Slovenia. Management priorities include maintaining traditional hay meadow management, restoring old orchards, and supporting local farmers who continue heritage farming practices. The park is a model for integrating cultural landscape conservation with biodiversity protection.

Major Trails And Attractions

The Open-Air Museum at Szalafő preserves traditional Őrség farmsteads with their distinctive wooden gabled houses, storage barns, and orchards, providing insight into historical rural life. The park has a dense network of hiking trails connecting the scattered hamlets through ancient landscape. The Öriszentpéter village is the park's main settlement with a visitor centre and accommodation. Water mills at several locations have been restored and are open to visitors. The Szőce nature trail showcases the park's spring-fed fen meadow communities. The park is popular for cycling on quiet country roads through the forested hills.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park's visitor centre is at Öriszentpéter, which is connected by road to Zalaegerszeg and Körmend. Public transport is limited; a private vehicle is recommended. The park runs guided themed tours including botanical walks, mushroom foraging excursions, and cultural heritage tours of traditional farmsteads. Accommodation is available in Öriszentpéter and in several rural guesthouses within the park. The cross-border Goricko Nature Park in Slovenia and Raab-Örseg Nature Park in Austria extend the protected landscape, and cross-border walking routes connect all three countries. The region is noted for its local food traditions, including pumpkin oil, elderflower syrup, and heritage apple varieties.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation management at Őrség is unusually focused on maintaining traditional land use rather than preventing human activity. Without the continuation of late-cut hay meadow management, the species-rich grasslands would rapidly succeed to scrub. The park supports local farmers through agri-environment agreements that pay for traditional management. Old orchard restoration involves removing invasive trees, pruning neglected trees, and planting heritage fruit varieties to maintain the orchard structure and invertebrate habitat. The park monitors otter populations along its stream network and participates in the national programme to restore native crayfish populations.
