About Fertő-Hanság

Fertő-Hanság National Park, established in 1991, protects the Hungarian part of the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel transboundary landscape shared with Austria, located in Győr-Moson-Sopron County in northwestern Hungary. The park covers approximately 235 square kilometres and encompasses the Hungarian shore and reedbeds of Lake Fertő (Neusiedler See), the largest endorheic lake in Central Europe, together with the adjacent Hanság peatland. The park forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape shared with Austria, recognised for its unique combination of natural wetland and cultural steppe landscape moulded over centuries by human use.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Lake Fertő's extensive reedbeds are one of Europe's most important breeding sites for aquatic birds. The park hosts breeding colonies of great white pelicans—rare in Central Europe—alongside thousands of purple herons, great egrets, grey herons, and little egrets. Spoonbills nest in the reed beds, and rare marsh terns including whiskered tern and white-winged black tern breed on the lake. The Hanság peatland supports breeding corncrakes and aquatic warblers, one of Europe's most endangered passerines. White-tailed eagles are resident year-round, and the autumn migration brings large concentrations of ducks and geese.

Flora Ecosystems

The park's vegetation is defined by the vast common reed beds covering more than half the Hungarian lake shore, reaching heights of three metres and forming impenetrable stands that shelter breeding waterbirds. Coastal halophyte communities, including glasswort and sea purslane, occupy the saline mud flats that develop as water levels fluctuate. The Hanság bog supports relic raised bog vegetation with sphagnum mosses, bog rosemary, and sundew, remnants of a much larger peatland that was largely drained in the 18th and 19th centuries. The park's grasslands include alkaline steppes with Hungarian grass and saltwort typical of the Pannonian plain.

Geology

Lake Fertő occupies a shallow tectonic depression that has existed in various forms since the Miocene. The lake is remarkably shallow, averaging only 1.5 metres in depth and reaching a maximum of 1.8 metres, making it extremely sensitive to evaporation and precipitation changes—the lake periodically dries out in prolonged drought periods, most recently in the 1860s. The lake basin is underlain by Neogene sediments covered by recent lacustrine and peat deposits. Saline soils develop around the lake margins due to evaporative concentration of dissolved minerals, creating distinctive alkali habitat that characterises the entire Pannonian basin.

Climate And Weather

The park enjoys a Pannonian continental climate with warm, dry summers and cold winters. July temperatures average 22°C, while January averages fall to −1°C. Annual precipitation is relatively low at 550–600 millimetres, which combined with high summer evaporation rates creates the semi-arid character of the lake's surroundings. The lake's shallowness means it freezes reliably each winter, historically making it a venue for ice sailing and skating. Strong northwesterly and southeasterly winds are characteristic of the open lakeshore, and wind is a constant ecological factor shaping reed bed structure.

Human History

The Lake Fertő region has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Celtic settlements documented around the lake shore. The Romans exploited the area for salt production. From the medieval period, the Habsburg aristocracy developed extensive estates on the lakeshore, most notably the Esterházy family's Eszterháza Palace (now Fertőd), where composer Joseph Haydn served for nearly three decades. The palace, known as the 'Hungarian Versailles,' is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Hungary's finest baroque monuments. The lake shore villages of Fertőrákos and Hegykő preserve distinctive lakeside fishing and reed-cutting cultures.

Park History

Fertő-Hanság National Park was established in 1991 as part of the broader recognition of the Austrian-Hungarian Neusiedler See landscape. It was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and, jointly with the Austrian Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park, received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001 as a Cultural Landscape. The Hanság section represents a major restoration achievement: former agricultural land drained from the extensive Hanság bog has been progressively re-wetted since the 1990s to restore peatland and wetland habitats. The transboundary cooperation between Hungary and Austria is a model for international park management in Europe.

Major Trails And Attractions

The park visitor centre at Sarród provides exhibitions on lake ecology and the history of human use of the Fertő landscape. Birdwatching observation towers along the Hungarian lakeshore offer views over the reed beds and the distant Austrian shore. The Fertőrákos Quarry, a former Roman limestone quarry converted into an open-air cultural venue, provides access to the lake's western shore. Cycling is extremely popular in the area, with the Lake Fertő cycle route circumnavigating the entire lake across both countries. The Esterházy Palace at Fertőd, six kilometres south of the lake, is a must-see baroque architectural monument.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park is accessible by road from Sopron, Hungary's westernmost city, approximately 15 kilometres from the lake. Train services connect Sopron with Budapest, and local bus services link lakeshore villages. The Esterházy Palace at Fertőd is open to visitors and hosts concerts. Accommodation options include hotels in Sopron, guesthouses in Fertőrákos, and camping facilities near the lake. The EuroVelo 14 cycle route passes through the area. Cross-border cycle trips into the Austrian Seewinkel are straightforward, with no formal border controls within the Schengen Area.

Conservation And Sustainability

The principal conservation challenge at Fertő-Hanság is managing water levels in the lake, which are influenced by precipitation, wind-driven oscillation, and human water management both within Hungary and upstream in Austria. Invasive hybrid cattail threatens to displace native reed beds, and the park authority conducts annual cutting programmes to control its spread. The re-wetting of former peat farmland in the Hanság is an ongoing project that has already produced significant habitat gains for aquatic warblers and corncrakes. Monitoring of water bird breeding success is carried out annually in coordination with BirdLife Hungary.
