About Guaricana

Guaricana National Park protects approximately 49,300 hectares of Atlantic Forest in Parana state, southern Brazil, along the escarpment of the Serra do Mar mountain range. Established in 2014, making it one of Brazil's newest national parks, Guaricana preserves a continuous tract of dense montane and submontane Atlantic Forest connecting coastal lowland forests with the highland plateau. The park's steep, mountainous terrain and persistent cloud cover have preserved exceptionally intact forest that was too difficult to log, resulting in one of the best-preserved Atlantic Forest remnants in southern Brazil.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Guaricana's intact forest supports a rich fauna including several threatened Atlantic Forest species. Jaguars and pumas are present as top predators, along with ocelots and margays. Primates include black lion tamarins and howler monkeys. The park provides habitat for tapirs, white-lipped peccaries, and various deer species. The avifauna is exceptionally rich, with over 300 species expected, including Atlantic Forest endemics like the black-fronted piping guan, purple-winged ground dove, and various antbirds, woodcreepers, and tanagers. The park's amphibian diversity is notable, with cloud forest species particularly well-represented.

Flora Ecosystems

The park protects dense ombrophilous forest (Atlantic rainforest) across an altitudinal gradient from approximately 50 to 1,500 meters, encompassing lowland, submontane, montane, and upper montane forest formations. The canopy reaches 25-30 meters in the lower forests, with emergent trees exceeding 35 meters. Epiphyte diversity is extraordinary, with hundreds of species of orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and mosses covering the trees and creating hanging gardens. Tree ferns dominate the understory at higher elevations. The cloud forest zone features stunted, moss-covered vegetation adapted to constant moisture and cool temperatures. Araucaria angustifolia (Parana pine) occurs at the highest elevations.

Geology

Guaricana occupies the eastern escarpment of the Serra do Mar, where ancient Precambrian crystalline rocks form a dramatic mountain front rising from the coastal plain. The geology consists primarily of granites and gneisses, with some areas of migmatite and schist. The escarpment was formed by the tectonic uplift associated with the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean beginning approximately 130 million years ago. Steep valleys carved by streams and rivers create complex topography with waterfalls, rapids, and deep gorges. The soils are generally shallow and acidic on steep slopes, with deeper alluvial deposits in valley floors.

Climate And Weather

Guaricana's climate is humid subtropical to tropical, strongly influenced by altitude and the orographic effect of the Serra do Mar. Annual rainfall is among the highest in southern Brazil, exceeding 3,000mm in some areas as moisture-laden Atlantic air masses are forced upward by the mountain barrier. Rainfall occurs year-round with no dry season. Temperatures range from averages of 22-25°C at lower elevations to 14-18°C in the upper montane zone. Cloud and fog immersion is frequent at higher elevations, maintaining high humidity and supporting luxuriant epiphyte growth. Frost can occur at the highest elevations during winter.

Human History

The Serra do Mar region of Parana was lightly inhabited by indigenous Guarani and Tupi peoples before European colonization. The steep, forested escarpment served as a natural barrier between the coast and the highland plateau, traversed by indigenous trails that later became colonial roads. During the colonial and imperial periods, the lower slopes were partially cleared for agriculture, while the steeper terrain remained forested. In the twentieth century, hydroelectric developments and road construction impacted some areas, though the extreme terrain protected much of the forest that now forms the park.

Park History

Guaricana National Park was established in 2014 by federal decree, consolidating an area that had previously received some protection as a state environmental protection area. The park was created to strengthen the conservation of the Serra do Mar forest corridor connecting existing protected areas in Parana. The establishment process involved negotiations with local communities and reconciliation of boundaries with existing land uses. The park is managed by ICMBio and forms part of the Lagamar Mosaic of protected areas, one of the largest continuous tracts of Atlantic Forest under protection.

Major Trails And Attractions

Guaricana offers opportunities to experience pristine Atlantic Forest in a dramatic mountain setting. Hiking trails through the forest reveal towering trees, cascading waterfalls, and diverse wildlife. The epiphyte-laden cloud forest at higher elevations creates an ethereal atmosphere, particularly when fog drifts through the moss-covered trees. Birdwatching is exceptional, with the varied altitudinal zones supporting different bird communities. The mountain streams and rivers offer crystal-clear waters and natural swimming pools. The scenic views from higher elevations encompass the coastal plain stretching to the Atlantic Ocean.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Guaricana National Park is located between the cities of Guaratuba on the coast and the highland city of Curitiba, Parana's capital, approximately 120 kilometers to the northwest. Access is via roads connecting the coast with the plateau, including the historic Graciosa Road. As a relatively new park, visitor infrastructure is still being developed. Trail access and guided visits can be coordinated through ICMBio. The nearest comprehensive tourism services are in Guaratuba and Morretes, the latter a charming historical town famous for its barreado (traditional slow-cooked meat dish). Year-round visitation is possible, though trails can be very muddy during heavy rainfall periods.

Conservation And Sustainability

Guaricana's conservation significance lies in its role as a corridor connecting coastal and highland Atlantic Forest fragments. The primary threats include illegal hunting and palm heart extraction (palmito jucara), hydroelectric project proposals, and road improvement projects that could fragment habitat. The park's steep terrain provides natural protection against agricultural conversion but also makes enforcement patrol challenging. Conservation priorities include strengthening the protected corridor, engaging with local communities through sustainable development programs, monitoring threatened species populations, and controlling invasive species at the park margins.
