About Totadgin
Totadgin Conservation Park is a conservation reserve in the Avon Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, near Kellerberrin east of Perth. The park protects mallee-heath, gimlet woodland, and granite outcrop habitats in the extensively cleared Wheatbelt. The Avon Wheatbelt is one of WA's most cleared bioregions, making remnant conservation reserves critical refugia for declining native species. Totadgin forms part of the conservation reserve network east of the Darling Range. The park is managed by DBCA.
Wildlife Ecosystems
Totadgin supports the fauna of eastern Wheatbelt woodland and mallee: western grey kangaroos, emus, echidnas, malleefowl, reptiles including goannas and numerous skinks, and a range of woodland bird species. Carnaby's black-cockatoo may be present in western sections with suitable banksia habitat. Wedge-tailed eagles and brown falcons patrol the area. Small mammals including mulgaras may persist in dense mallee.
Flora Ecosystems
Gimlet (E. salubris) and salmon gum (E. salmonophloia) woodland on red loam soils transitions to mallee-heath on sandy soils. Wandoo and jam (Acacia acuminata) woodland occurs on yellow clay soils. Granite outcrops support specialist plant communities. Spring wildflower displays include everlastings and various daisy species characteristic of the eastern Wheatbelt.
Geology
Totadgin sits on the Yilgarn Craton — Archaean granite-gneiss overlain by deep laterite. Granite inselbergs provide rocky terrain contrasting with surrounding flat plains. Salt lakes in topographic depressions accumulate saline groundwater.
Climate And Weather
Semi-arid Mediterranean climate with 280–380 mm annual rainfall. Hot summers and cool winters. Extended drought periods are characteristic.
Human History
Totadgin lies within Ballardong Noongar country. Aboriginal people used the eastern Wheatbelt semi-arid woodland for hunting and gathering before European farming development from the 1890s eliminated most native vegetation from the broader landscape.
Park History
Totadgin Conservation Park was reserved to protect representative Wheatbelt woodland and mallee-heath. The park is part of the DBCA conservation reserve network for the Avon Wheatbelt bioregion.
Major Trails And Attractions
Nature walks through gimlet and salmon gum woodland. Spring wildflower observation. Malleefowl mound observation. Granite outcrop exploration.
Visitor Facilities And Travel
Located near Kellerberrin on the Great Eastern Highway. Minimal facilities. Free entry. Kellerberrin provides basic services.
Conservation And Sustainability
Fox and cat predation is the primary threat to malleefowl. Wandoo decline syndrome, invasive weeds (annual pasture grasses, cape weed), and altered fire regimes are significant challenges. The isolated reserve has limited wildlife immigration potential.
