About Swan Estuary

Swan Estuary Marine Park is a 2,510-hectare marine protected area protecting the lower Swan River estuary and its immediately adjacent foreshore, extending from the Swan River mouth at Fremantle upstream through the inner estuary to Bicton and Pelican Point. The park protects the marine and estuarine habitats of one of the world's most urbanised estuaries — the Swan River flowing through central Perth. Despite extensive development on its shores, the Swan Estuary retains significant ecological value for migratory shorebirds, seagrass communities, and estuarine fish. The park is managed by DBCA.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The Swan Estuary is internationally significant for migratory shorebirds on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, particularly at Point Walter and South Perth foreshore. Red-necked stints, curlew sandpipers, great knots, and bar-tailed godwits travel from Siberia to overwinter at the Swan. Australian pelicans, black swans, cormorants, herons, and spoonbills are year-round residents. Bottlenose dolphins enter the river to feed on bream and mullet. Western Australian seahorses (Hippocampus subelongatus) inhabit seagrass beds. The estuary supports important snapper, bream, and mulloway fisheries.

Flora Ecosystems

Seagrass meadows of Ruppia megacarpa and Halophila ovalis occur in the lower estuary. Saltmarsh (Tecticornia, Sarcocornia) communities fringe the upper tidal reaches. The foreshore retains some areas of native coastal vegetation. Freshwater macrophytes transition the mixing zone. The overall ecological condition of the estuary has been significantly improved through nutrient reduction programs.

Geology

The Swan River occupies a Pleistocene valley drowned by rising sea levels after the last glacial maximum (approximately 10,000 years ago). The estuary floor consists of estuarine mud, sand, and organic sediments accumulated since inundation. The river outflow meets the Indian Ocean through the narrow Fremantle Harbour entrance.

Climate And Weather

Mediterranean climate. Annual rainfall approximately 700 mm, concentrated in winter. The Swan River is highly seasonal — large winter flows and very low summer flows. Summer salinity intrudes well upstream due to low river flow. The estuary is thermally stratified in summer.

Human History

The Swan River (Derbal Yerrigan in Whadjuk Noongar language) is the heart of Whadjuk Noongar country. The river provided the primary reason for European settlement of Perth in 1829. The Swan has been central to Perth's identity — providing water, food, recreation, and transport. Extensive foreshore development, nutrient pollution from stormwater, and dredging have degraded the estuary over two centuries of European occupation.

Park History

Swan Estuary Marine Park was established to protect the ecological values of the lower Swan River, including its internationally significant migratory shorebird habitats. The park complements the Swan River Trust's management of the broader Swan-Canning river system.

Major Trails And Attractions

Migratory shorebird viewing at Point Walter and South Perth foreshore (September–March). Dolphin watching from Fremantle foreshore and the river. Black swan viewing throughout. Cycling and walking on the foreshore paths. Kayaking in calm reaches.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The marine park encompasses the Swan River foreshore through metropolitan Perth, accessible from multiple points along the river. No entry fees. Facilities provided by local governments along the foreshore.

Conservation And Sustainability

Nutrient enrichment from urban stormwater causes toxic blue-green algal blooms that periodically close sections of the river. The migratory shorebird habitat at Point Walter requires active management to maintain intertidal foraging areas. Exotic marine species have colonised the harbour entrance. Climate change is extending summer hypoxic conditions in the lower estuary.
