About Pedra Branca

Pedra Branca Nature Reserve is a remote, wave-lashed rock formation approximately 27 kilometres from Tasmania's South East Cape, rising dramatically from the Southern Ocean as a white-coloured erosional remnant. The name means 'White Rock' in Portuguese, reflecting the whitish colour of the weathered rock surface, which is also enhanced by the guano of the seabird colonies it supports. The reserve protects breeding populations of shy albatross and Australasian gannets on this isolated Southern Ocean sea stack.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Pedra Branca is one of Australia's most remote breeding sites for shy albatross, with a small colony of this globally vulnerable species nesting on the accessible ledges of the rock. Australasian gannets also breed on the reserve, using the elevated rocky surfaces for their conspicuous stick nests. The surrounding Southern Ocean waters are rich feeding grounds for these large seabirds. The rock's position as an isolated outpost in the Southern Ocean makes it an important waypoint for migrating seabirds.

Flora Ecosystems

Pedra Branca's surface supports minimal vegetation beyond guano-influenced communities of nitrogen-tolerant herbs and encrusting lichens that can survive the extreme exposure. The whitish appearance of the rock reflects both the quartz or calcite mineral content of the rock and the extensive covering of white guano from the breeding bird colonies.

Geology

Pedra Branca is thought to be composed of ancient Precambrian metamorphic or igneous rocks, an isolated erosional remnant of the coastal terrain that has persisted above sea level while surrounding rocks were eroded. The white rock colour suggests high silica or calcite content in the rock type.

Climate And Weather

Pedra Branca experiences some of the most extreme weather conditions of any Australian nature reserve, fully exposed to the roaring forties winds and Southern Ocean swells of the zone south of Tasmania. Access is rarely possible due to the dangerous sea conditions.

Human History

Pedra Branca was known to early mariners as a hazard on the southern approach to Tasmania. The name reflects Portuguese or southern European maritime naming traditions of the colonial era.

Park History

Pedra Branca was declared a nature reserve to protect its breeding seabird colonies, particularly the globally significant shy albatross. The extreme remoteness of the reserve provides de facto protection from most disturbance.

Major Trails And Attractions

No visitor access or infrastructure. The rock can be viewed from passing vessels, and the seabird colonies are visible from the sea.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

No public access permitted. Research visits require Parks and Wildlife Tasmania permits and are subject to extreme sea conditions.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation focuses on the shy albatross colony's protection from longline fishing mortality and monitoring of breeding success. The gannet colony is also monitored. Climate change poses risks to the Southern Ocean food web that supports these seabirds.
