About Kalgulup
Kalgulup Regional Park protects native jarrah and marri forest in the Collie region of WA's Southwest, providing accessible bushland and wildlife habitat in an area of significant coal mining and agricultural history. The park is one of the larger regional parks in the southwest, offering walking, mountain biking, and nature study opportunities close to Bunbury. The name Kalgulup is a Noongar word, reflecting the traditional connections of Wardandi Noongar people to this forested landscape. The park contributes to conservation of the southwest forest ecosystem while providing recreational access for residents of the Bunbury–Harvey region.
Wildlife Ecosystems
Kalgulup supports jarrah forest fauna including baudin's black cockatoos and forest red-tailed black cockatoos, which are among the most ecologically significant residents. Western grey kangaroos and brushtail possums are common. Short-beaked echidnas and bobtail skinks are regularly encountered. The forest supports diverse birdlife including western rosellas, red-capped parrots, and various honeyeaters. The park's proximity to Bunbury means it serves as important urban wildlife habitat and a green corridor.
Flora Ecosystems
Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) and marri (Corymbia calophylla) forest with karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) in wetter sections. Blackbutt (Eucalyptus patens) may be present on suitable soils. The understorey features zamia palms, acacia shrubs, and a diverse spring wildflower flora. Wetland patches within the park support paperbark and sedge communities.
Geology
The park sits on the coastal plain geological transition zone near the Darling Scarp, with Archaean basement overlain by younger sedimentary deposits. Collie's geological significance relates to its coal deposits — the Collie Coal Basin is WA's only coal-producing region.
