About Wilson

Wilson State Park is located on the shores of Budd Lake in Clare County in the heart of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The park provides lakeside recreation on one of central Michigan's most popular inland lakes. Budd Lake, a 170-acre spring-fed lake, offers clear waters and good fishing. The park's central Michigan location makes it accessible to residents throughout the state.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Budd Lake supports panfish, largemouth bass, and northern pike. The lake attracts waterfowl including mallards, wood ducks, and Canada geese. Loons are occasionally observed. White-tailed deer inhabit the surrounding forest. The park's mix of hardwood and conifer forest supports diverse songbirds including wood thrushes, scarlet tanagers, and various warbler species.

Flora Ecosystems

The park features a mix of northern hardwoods and conifers including sugar maple, red oak, white pine, and red pine. The understory includes ferns, dogwood, and various shrubs. The lake margin supports cattails, rushes, and water lilies. Wildflowers including trillium and wild geranium bloom in spring.

Geology

Budd Lake occupies a glacial kettle, formed when a block of glacial ice buried in drift melted, leaving a depression that filled with groundwater. The spring-fed lake has relatively clear water. The surrounding terrain consists of glacial deposits including outwash sand and gravel.

Climate And Weather

Central Michigan experiences a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Summer temperatures reach the low to mid 80s. Winter temperatures frequently drop below zero. Lake recreation is best from June through September.

Human History

The central Michigan region was home to Ojibwe and Saginaw Chippewa peoples. Euro-American settlement brought logging and then agriculture. The town of Harrison developed as a lumber center and later as a tourist destination centered on the area's many lakes.

Park History

Wilson State Park was established to provide public lakeside recreation in central Michigan. The park has been developed with camping and beach facilities to serve the demand for inland lake recreation.

Major Trails And Attractions

Swimming and fishing in Budd Lake are the primary attractions. The beach offers a sandy swimming area. A boat launch provides lake access. A nature trail loops through the park's forest. The park is near the gateway to Michigan's north country, with numerous additional lakes and forests within easy reach.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Wilson State Park is in Harrison on Budd Lake. The park offers 160 modern campsites, a swimming beach, boat launch, and picnic area. Harrison provides basic visitor services. The park is approximately 2 hours north of Lansing.
