Mount Tom State Reservation encompasses 2,082 acres of the dramatic Mount Tom Range in Holyoke and Easthampton, featuring significant cliff habitats and exceptional Connecticut Valley views.
Wildlife Ecosystems
The cliffs provide nesting habitat for peregrine falcons and ravens. The diverse habitats support black bear, bobcat, and numerous bird species. Timber rattlesnakes inhabit rocky areas.
Flora Ecosystems
Oak forests dominate the slopes, with unusual trap rock communities on exposed cliffs. The south-facing cliffs support plants at the northern edge of their range.
Geology
The Mount Tom Range consists of erosion-resistant trap rock (basalt), the same formation as Mount Holyoke Range across the valley. The dramatic cliffs rise 1,200 feet above the valley floor.
