About Wind Creek

Wind Creek State Park spans 1,444 acres along the shores of Lake Martin, a 41,000-acre clear-water reservoir with 900 miles of shoreline in east-central Alabama. The park boasts one of the largest state-operated campgrounds in the United States with 586 campsites, 157 of them waterfront. Located south of Alexander City, Wind Creek provides extensive access to one of the South's most beautiful lakes for fishing, boating, swimming, and shoreline recreation.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The park serves as a stop on Alabama's Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail, with bald eagles and ospreys present throughout the year. Waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds are common along the shoreline and forested areas. Lake Martin supports excellent populations of largemouth bass, spotted bass, and striped bass, along with crappie, bream, and catfish. White-tailed deer and wild turkeys inhabit the wooded portions of the park.

Flora Ecosystems

Mixed pine and hardwood forests cover the park's upland areas, with shoreline vegetation adapted to the fluctuating lake levels. Geology

Lake Martin occupies the Tallapoosa River valley, impounded by Martin Dam completed in 1926. The 41,000-acre reservoir with 900 miles of shoreline was created for hydroelectric power generation. The surrounding terrain of rolling hills is typical of Alabama's Piedmont province, with soils developed from ancient crystalline rocks. The clear water results from the relatively undeveloped watershed.
