About Squirrel Creek

Squirrel Creek State Recreation Site provides camping and creek access along the Richardson Highway in the Copper River Basin. The 352-acre site offers facilities in a boreal forest setting with access to fishing in the creek and nearby Tonsina River. The recreation site serves highway travelers and those seeking outdoor recreation in the scenic Copper River region.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The creek and surrounding forest support moose, black and grizzly bears, and various furbearers. Arctic grayling inhabit the clear creek waters. The area lies within the range of the Nelchina caribou herd, and animals may occasionally pass through. Waterfowl and songbirds utilize the riparian corridor during summer months.

Flora Ecosystems

White spruce and birch forest covers the better-drained areas, with willow thickets along the stream. The understory includes wild rose, highbush cranberry, and typical interior plants. Fireweed brightens clearings in summer, while blueberries and cranberries provide fall harvest.

Geology

The site lies within the Copper River Basin, a broad lowland surrounded by major mountain ranges. Glacial and alluvial deposits cover the valley floor over ancient bedrock. The Wrangell Mountains visible to the east include massive shield volcanoes that have been active in geologically recent times.

Climate And Weather

The interior basin location creates a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. Temperatures can reach 80°F in summer but plunge to -40°F in winter. Annual precipitation is low, around 10-12 inches. Clear weather often provides stunning views of surrounding mountains.

Human History

Ahtna Athabascan peoples have inhabited the Copper River region for thousands of years. The Richardson Highway follows earlier trails used for military communications and gold rush traffic. The highway remains the principal connection between Valdez and interior Alaska.

Park History

Squirrel Creek State Recreation Site was developed to provide camping and recreation facilities along the Richardson Highway. The site offers a convenient stopping point in the scenic Copper River Basin. It serves travelers between Valdez and interior destinations as well as those exploring the Wrangell-St. Elias region.

Major Trails And Attractions

Grayling fishing in Squirrel Creek is a primary attraction. The campground offers a peaceful forested setting with mountain views. The site serves as a base for exploring the Copper River Basin and nearby Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Wildlife viewing opportunities include chances to spot moose and various birds.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The recreation site offers approximately 25 campsites, vault toilets, and creek access. Located along the Richardson Highway between Valdez and Glennallen, it is accessible by paved road. Glennallen provides basic services about 25 miles to the north. The site operates primarily from May through September.

Conservation And Sustainability

The site provides concentrated camping that minimizes impacts to the surrounding forest and stream. Fishing regulations maintain healthy grayling populations. The compact development preserves the natural character of this scenic highway corridor.
