About Sand Lake ATV Site

Sand Lake Recreation Area provides access to extensive sand dunes for off-highway vehicle recreation on Oregon's north coast. The large sand dunes system offers challenging terrain for ATVs and other off-highway vehicles. The site is one of Oregon's designated areas for motorized recreation in a coastal dune environment.

Wildlife Ecosystems

While the actively used dune areas support limited wildlife, the surrounding wetlands and forests provide habitat for diverse species. Shorebirds use the estuary margins. The adjacent Sand Lake supports waterfowl and wading birds. Wildlife tends to avoid the areas of heavy OHV use.

Flora Ecosystems

European beach grass stabilizes portions of the dunes, while native dune plants survive in less disturbed areas. The surrounding wetlands support typical coastal marsh vegetation. Shore pine forest borders the dune system. The vegetation reflects the balance between active dunes and stabilized areas.

Geology

The extensive sand dune system formed from beach sand blown inland by coastal winds. The dunes are constantly reshaped by wind and occasionally waves. Sand Lake itself is a partially enclosed tidal lagoon. The geology represents the dynamic nature of coastal landforms.

Climate And Weather

The area experiences the mild, wet climate of the north Oregon coast. Summers are cool with temperatures in the 60s°F. Winters are mild and wet. Coastal winds shape the dunes and can create challenging conditions for recreation. Fog is common, especially in summer.

Human History

The Tillamook people utilized this coastal area for thousands of years. Euro-American settlement brought dairy farming to the surrounding area. Off-highway vehicle recreation developed in the mid-20th century as vehicles became more capable. The site has been designated to concentrate this use.

Park History

Sand Lake Recreation Area was designated to provide a legal area for off-highway vehicle recreation while protecting other coastal areas. Oregon State Parks manages the site in coordination with other agencies. The site provides a designated location for a popular but environmentally impactful activity.

Major Trails And Attractions

The extensive dune system provides varied terrain for ATVs, dirt bikes, and other off-highway vehicles. The dunes offer challenges for riders of all skill levels. Sand Lake itself provides opportunities for fishing and wildlife watching. The coastal setting adds scenic value.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The site provides staging areas and basic facilities for OHV users. Vehicle requirements and rules must be followed. Located on the Three Capes Scenic Route near Tierra Del Mar. Users should check current regulations and conditions before visiting.

Conservation And Sustainability

Designating specific areas for OHV use helps protect other coastal habitats. The site demonstrates how recreation can be accommodated while limiting impacts. Riders are encouraged to respect closed areas and sensitive habitats. Erosion control and vegetation management address impacts.
