About Row River

Row River State Park encompasses a scenic stretch of this southern Willamette Valley river and provides access to the Row River Trail, a popular rail-trail conversion. The park offers riverside recreation including fishing, swimming, and picnicking in a peaceful forested setting. The trail provides a scenic route for cycling and walking.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The river corridor supports diverse wildlife including beaver, river otter, and mule deer. The Row River hosts salmon and steelhead during spawning runs. Bald eagles and ospreys hunt along the river. Great blue herons fish the shallows. The riparian forest provides habitat for numerous songbirds.

Flora Ecosystems

Riparian forest along the river includes Douglas fir, bigleaf maple, and Oregon ash. The understory features sword fern, Oregon grape, and native shrubs. Willows and alders line the riverbanks. The forest provides shade and contributes to the cool water temperatures important for fish.

Geology

The Row River flows from the Cascade foothills through the southern Willamette Valley. The river has carved its valley through volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Gravel bars and pools characterize the river channel. The underlying geology includes rocks from Coast Range and Cascade formations.

Climate And Weather

The park experiences a temperate climate with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. Summer temperatures reach the 80s-90s°F, making river swimming appealing. Winter temperatures average in the 40s with substantial rainfall. The forested canyon moderates temperatures.

Human History

The Row River valley has been home to indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Euro-American settlement brought logging and railroad construction. The Oregon Pacific and Eastern Railway operated along the river. When the railroad ceased operations, the route was converted to a recreational trail.

Park History

Row River State Park was established to provide public access to this scenic river and the converted rail-trail. Oregon State Parks developed facilities for camping, picnicking, and river access. The park works with other agencies to maintain the Row River Trail.

Major Trails And Attractions

The Row River Trail extends for 16 miles, popular for cycling and walking on the paved surface. The river offers swimming holes and fishing access. The forested setting provides a peaceful atmosphere. The trail passes through a covered bridge and other historic sites.

Visitor Facilities And Travel
