About Pinckney

Pinckney State Recreation Area encompasses over 11,000 acres in Washtenaw and Livingston Counties in southeastern Michigan. One of the largest state recreation areas in the Lower Peninsula, the property features a rolling glacial landscape with numerous lakes, extensive trail systems, and diverse habitats. The area serves as a critical green space for the nearby Ann Arbor and Detroit metropolitan populations.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The extensive, connected habitats support diverse wildlife including white-tailed deer, coyotes, red foxes, and wild turkeys. Sandhill cranes nest in the wetlands. The numerous lakes support bass, bluegill, and pike. Bald eagles and osprey use the larger lakes. The large size of the recreation area supports species that need extensive forest tracts.

Flora Ecosystems

The recreation area features oak-hickory forests, wetlands, meadows, and scattered pine plantations. Red oak, white oak, and shagbark hickory dominate the uplands. Wetlands support diverse marsh vegetation. The rolling terrain creates varied growing conditions supporting high plant diversity.

Geology

The landscape is a classic glacial moraine with rolling hills, kettle lakes, and outwash deposits. The Potawatomi Trail follows the ridges of the moraine, providing elevation changes that make it one of the most challenging mountain biking trails in the state.

Climate And Weather

Humid continental climate typical of southeastern Michigan, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters.

Human History

The Potawatomi people inhabited the region. Euro-American settlement brought farming. The recreation area was assembled from former agricultural lands.

Park History

Pinckney State Recreation Area was established as one of the large state recreation areas serving southeastern Michigan's population.

Major Trails And Attractions

The Potawatomi Trail is a 17-mile loop popular with mountain bikers and backpackers. The Waterloo-Pinckney Trail connects to the adjacent Waterloo State Recreation Area. Swimming, fishing, and boating are available at several lakes. Hunting is permitted in season.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The recreation area is near Pinckney off Highway 36. Campgrounds, boat launches, and trailheads are available. Ann Arbor provides full visitor services approximately 20 miles south.
