About Monroe

Monroe State Forest encompasses 4,321 acres of rugged terrain in the remote northwestern corner of Massachusetts, including Spruce Mountain, one of the highest peaks in the state.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The large forest block supports moose, black bear, bobcat, and fisher. The boreal-character forests support northern bird species. Breeding birds include Bicknell's thrush at higher elevations.

Flora Ecosystems

Boreal forests of red spruce and balsam fir dominate higher elevations, transitioning to northern hardwoods below. The flora resembles northern New England more than typical Massachusetts.

Geology

Spruce Mountain rises to 2,730 feet, among the highest elevations in Massachusetts. The metamorphic bedrock reflects ancient mountain-building events.

Climate And Weather

The high elevation produces some of the coldest conditions in Massachusetts. Heavy snowfall accumulates through winter. Summer temperatures average in the 60s.

Human History

Indigenous peoples utilized these highlands seasonally. The remote terrain limited colonial settlement. Fire towers historically monitored for forest fires.

Park History

The state acquired the forest to protect headwaters and provide backcountry recreation. The remote character has been maintained.

Major Trails And Attractions

Trails climb to Spruce Mountain summit. The Dunbar Brook Trail follows a scenic stream. Winter activities include backcountry skiing. The remote character attracts those seeking solitude.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Very limited facilities exist. The forest is accessible via Route 2 and local roads in Florida and Monroe. The remote location requires significant travel.

Conservation And Sustainability

The forest protects boreal habitat at the southern edge of its range. Climate monitoring tracks changes in high-elevation ecosystems.
