About Menominee River

Menominee River State Recreation Area spans the border between Menominee and Dickinson Counties in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, along the Menominee River, which forms the Michigan-Wisconsin boundary. The recreation area preserves riverside and forest habitats along one of the Upper Peninsula's major rivers, offering fishing, paddling, and camping in a wild, remote setting.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The Menominee River supports walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and muskellunge. Bald eagles are common along the river. The surrounding forest provides habitat for black bears, white-tailed deer, and various small mammals. River otters frequent the waterway. The diverse riparian habitat supports nesting songbirds and waterfowl.

Flora Ecosystems

Northern hardwood and boreal forest line the river corridor. Sugar maple, yellow birch, hemlock, and white pine dominate. The river's edge supports tag alder, willow, and various riparian plants. The forest understory features ferns, wildflowers, and shade-tolerant shrubs. The river corridor provides important habitat connectivity.

Geology

The Menominee River has carved its channel through Precambrian and Paleozoic bedrock, creating rapids and pools that provide excellent fish habitat. The river's course follows geological structures in the ancient rock. Glacial deposits overlie the bedrock in many areas.

Climate And Weather

The Upper Peninsula border region has a continental climate with cold, snowy winters and moderate summers. The river's influence creates a somewhat moderated microclimate along the corridor.

Human History

The Menominee people, for whom the river is named, inhabited this region. The river served as a transportation route and boundary. Logging drove the boom era of the late 19th century, with the river used to transport logs to the mills at Menominee.

Park History

Menominee River State Recreation Area was established to preserve public access to the river and its surrounding forest habitats.

Major Trails And Attractions

Fishing for walleye and bass is the primary attraction. The river provides excellent canoeing and kayaking. Hiking trails explore the forest. Camping along the river offers a remote, wilderness-like experience.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The recreation area is in the southern Upper Peninsula near the Wisconsin border. Rustic campsites and river access are provided. Menominee and Iron Mountain provide visitor services.

Conservation And Sustainability

River water quality and fish habitat are managed through cooperation with Wisconsin. The forest corridor is maintained for ecological health and wildlife habitat.
