Wildlife Ecosystems

The rocky intertidal zone supports diverse marine communities including purple sea urchins, sea anemones, various crab species, and sea stars. Harbor seals rest on nearby rocks. Shorebirds forage along the tide line. Brown pelicans and cormorants fish offshore. Gray whales are visible during migration.

Flora Ecosystems

Coastal scrub vegetation covers the bluffs above the beach, including salal, coyote brush, and coastal grasses. Shore pine and Sitka spruce grow in sheltered areas. Hardy wildflowers bloom on the cliff edges. Kelp beds offshore provide important marine habitat.

Geology

McVay Rock and the surrounding formations are composed of Tertiary-age marine sedimentary rocks, eroded by wave action into dramatic shapes. The southern Oregon coast near Bandon features some of the most photogenic rock formations in the state, including sea stacks, arches, and pillar formations.

Climate And Weather

Mild maritime climate with cool summers and wet winters. Annual precipitation averages 60-70 inches. The area receives more sunshine than the central coast. Winter storms create dramatic wave action against the rock formations.

Human History

The Coquille people utilized the rocky coastline for gathering shellfish and other marine resources. Bandon was settled by Euro-Americans in the 1870s and has rebuilt after several devastating fires.

Park History

McVay Rock was established as a state recreation site to provide public access to this scenic stretch of the southern Oregon coast.
