About Lake Louise
Lake Louise State Recreation Area encompasses 90 acres on the shore of Lake Louise, one of Interior Alaska's largest lakes and a premier destination for fishing, boating, and winter recreation. The lake is known for excellent lake trout and grayling fishing and serves as a center for snowmachine recreation in winter. Located off the Glenn Highway via the Lake Louise Road, the area provides both developed facilities and access to a vast wilderness of interconnected lakes and streams.
Wildlife Ecosystems
Lake Louise supports populations of lake trout, grayling, burbot, and whitefish. The surrounding wilderness harbors moose, bears, wolves, and caribou from the Nelchina herd. Waterfowl nest on the lake and surrounding wetlands. The undeveloped shoreline provides quality wildlife habitat.
Flora Ecosystems
Boreal forest of spruce with birch and aspen surrounds the lake. Wetlands are extensive in the flat terrain. Alpine tundra occurs on higher elevations in the distance. The natural vegetation remains largely intact despite recreational use.
Geology
Lake Louise occupies a large glacial basin in the Copper River plateau. The lake reaches considerable depth, supporting the cold-water fish populations. The surrounding terrain consists of glacial deposits and bedrock outcrops. The lake connects to an extensive system of smaller lakes.

The high elevation and Interior location create a severe continental climate. Summer temperatures are pleasant, typically reaching the 60s and 70s. Winters are extremely cold, with temperatures regularly dropping below minus 40°F. Heavy snowfall supports excellent snowmachine conditions.
Human History
Athabascan peoples utilized the Lake Louise area for hunting and fishing for thousands of years. The lake became accessible following road construction. Recreational development began in the mid-20th century. The area became a center for winter recreation.
