About Lake Hudson

Lake Hudson State Recreation Area is located in Lenawee County in southeastern Michigan, centered on the 625-acre Lake Hudson, one of the largest inland lakes in the region. The recreation area provides lake-based recreation including fishing, boating, and swimming in a natural setting within reach of both Michigan's and Ohio's urban populations.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Lake Hudson supports largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, bluegill, and crappie. The lake's marshy edges attract great blue herons, green herons, and various waterfowl. Bald eagles fish the lake. White-tailed deer and wild turkeys are common. The diverse fish community makes the lake a popular angling destination.

Flora Ecosystems

The recreation area features oak-hickory forest, wetlands, and lake-edge habitat. The lake margins support emergent aquatic plants including cattails, bulrushes, and water lilies. The forest includes red oak, white oak, shagbark hickory, and black walnut. Wildflowers bloom in the forest understory and meadow edges.

Geology

Lake Hudson is a natural glacial lake, one of the larger natural lakes in southeastern Michigan. The lake basin was formed by glacial processes during the Wisconsin glaciation. The surrounding terrain is relatively flat glacial till plain.
