About Island Lake

Island Lake State Recreation Area encompasses over 4,000 acres in Livingston County in southeastern Michigan, centered around several lakes and the Huron River. The recreation area is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in southeastern Michigan, providing a green oasis between the Detroit and Lansing metropolitan areas with extensive trails, fishing lakes, and natural areas.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The Huron River and associated lakes support bass, pike, and panfish. The diverse habitats attract white-tailed deer, coyotes, wild turkeys, and red foxes. Waterfowl use the lakes and wetlands. Bald eagles and osprey have been observed. The large forested areas support owls, hawks, and diverse songbird populations. Sandhill cranes nest in the wetlands.

Flora Ecosystems

The recreation area features oak-hickory forests, riparian corridors along the Huron River, wetlands, and meadows. Red oak, white oak, and shagbark hickory dominate uplands. River and wetland margins support willow, dogwood, and various wetland plants. The Huron River corridor provides habitat diversity.

Geology

The recreation area occupies glacial terrain with rolling hills, kettle lakes, and the Huron River valley. The topography was created by the Wisconsin glaciation. Sandy and gravelly soils from glacial outwash characterize much of the area.

Humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters typical of southeastern Michigan.

The Potawatomi inhabited the region. The Huron River has been a transportation corridor for thousands of years. Euro-American settlement brought farming and the community of Brighton.

Over 14 miles of paved trails and additional unpaved trails serve hikers, cyclists, and cross-country skiers. Fishing and canoeing on the Huron River and lakes are popular. A hot-air balloon festival is held at the park. A shooting range serves hunters and sport shooters.

The recreation area is off Interstate 96 near Brighton. Parking, trails, boat launches, and picnic areas are available. Canoe and kayak rentals are available seasonally. Brighton provides full visitor services.
