About Gold Butte

Gold Butte National Monument protects nearly 300,000 acres of remote Mojave Desert wilderness in southeastern Nevada, featuring an extraordinary concentration of ancient rock art, colorful sandstone formations, and Joshua tree forests. The monument encompasses a landscape sacred to Southern Paiute peoples and preserves critical habitat for the threatened desert tortoise. Designated in 2016, Gold Butte offers one of Nevada's most remarkable backcountry experiences.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The monument provides critical habitat for the threatened Mojave desert tortoise, with some of the highest densities in Nevada. Desert bighorn sheep traverse the rugged mountains while mountain lions, kit foxes, and Gila monsters inhabit the diverse terrain. Over 300 species of wildlife have been documented including golden eagles, burrowing owls, and numerous reptiles. The Virgin River tributary canyons support small fish populations and riparian wildlife.

Flora Ecosystems

Extensive Joshua tree forests cover the higher elevations, among the finest examples of this iconic ecosystem in Nevada. Creosote bush, blackbrush, and various cacti dominate lower elevations. Pockets of relict ponderosa pine survive on the highest peaks, remnants of cooler climate periods. Spring wildflower displays can be spectacular following wet winters. The Monument protects several plant species of conservation concern endemic to the region.

Geology

The monument showcases 500 million years of geological history, from ancient Paleozoic limestones to brilliantly colored Aztec Sandstone formations. Little Finland, with its eroded red sandstone fantasylands, ranks among Nevada's most otherworldly landscapes. The Virgin Mountains expose some of the oldest rocks in the region. Active faulting along the Grand Wash Cliffs marks the dramatic western boundary of the Colorado Plateau.

Climate And Weather

Gold Butte experiences a hot desert climate with extreme summer temperatures exceeding 110 degrees Fahrenheit at lower elevations. Winters are mild with occasional freezing nights at higher elevations. Annual precipitation averages only 4-8 inches, falling as winter rain and occasional summer monsoon thunderstorms. The higher peaks receive occasional dustings of snow. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions for exploration.

Human History

Southern Paiute peoples have lived in this landscape for thousands of years, leaving behind an extraordinary concentration of rock art including petroglyphs and pictographs at hundreds of sites. Falling Man, depicting a descending human figure, is among Nevada's most recognized archaeological images. Historic period sites include remnants of ranching operations and mining camps that briefly flourished in the remote desert.

Park History

President Obama designated Gold Butte National Monument on December 28, 2016, following years of advocacy by conservation groups, tribes, and local supporters. The designation protected the area from mining claims and large-scale development while preserving traditional uses. The Bureau of Land Management administers the monument, working to balance protection of sensitive resources with recreational access.

Major Trails And Attractions

Little Finland showcases fantastically eroded red sandstone formations unlike anywhere else in Nevada. Whitney Pocket features accessible rock art panels and camping areas. Falling Man petroglyph site displays iconic ancient artwork. The Red Rocks provide dramatic sandstone scenery. Devil's Throat is a spectacular collapsed cavern. Numerous backcountry roads access remote canyons and archaeological sites throughout the monument.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The monument has no developed visitor facilities; visitors must be self-sufficient with water, fuel, and supplies. Access requires high-clearance vehicles on unpaved roads from either Interstate 15 or Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The nearest services are in Mesquite, Nevada, approximately 30 miles away. Several primitive camping areas exist but have no amenities. Cell phone coverage is nonexistent throughout most of the monument.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation priorities include protecting irreplaceable archaeological sites from looting and vandalism, preserving desert tortoise habitat, and managing recreational impacts. Off-road vehicle damage to cryptobiotic soils and sensitive resources remains a concern. Climate change threatens Joshua tree populations and already-stressed wildlife. The Bureau of Land Management collaborates with tribal partners to protect sacred sites and incorporate traditional knowledge into management.
