About Elk Creek Tunnel Forest

Elk Creek Tunnel Forest State Scenic Corridor preserves a forested stretch along the highway in Douglas County, Oregon, in the Coast Range. The corridor's name references a railroad tunnel in the area and the forested landscape of the Elk Creek drainage. The scenic corridor protects the visual character of the highway route through mature coastal forest.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The Coast Range forest supports Roosevelt elk (appropriate given the name), black-tailed deer, and black bears. The Elk Creek drainage provides habitat for salmon and steelhead. Varied thrushes, pileated woodpeckers, and other forest birds inhabit the mature stands.

Flora Ecosystems

Douglas-fir dominates the forest canopy with western hemlock and western red cedar. Bigleaf maple provides fall color. The lush understory includes sword fern, Oregon grape, and vine maple. The forest represents a productive example of the Coast Range forest type.

Geology

The underlying geology includes marine sedimentary formations of the southern Coast Range. Elk Creek has carved its valley through these formations. The railroad tunnel referenced in the name was cut through the rock for the early railroad line that served the area's timber industry.

Climate And Weather

Annual precipitation averages 50-70 inches, supporting productive forest growth. Summers are warm and dry; winters are cool and wet.

Human History

The area was home to Upper Umpqua peoples before Euro-American settlement. Railroad construction and logging dominated the area's history from the late 19th century onward.

Park History

The corridor was designated to preserve the scenic forest character visible from the highway, maintaining the green backdrop for travelers.

Major Trails And Attractions

The scenic drive through the forest corridor is the primary attraction. The area provides access to the broader Umpqua River drainage and its recreational opportunities.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The corridor is along the highway in Douglas County. No developed facilities exist within the corridor. Roseburg provides full visitor services.

Conservation And Sustainability

The corridor is managed to preserve scenic and ecological values. The surrounding forest landscape faces challenges from timber harvest practices, wildfire risk, and invasive species.
