About Bridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls State Scenic Viewpoint is a treasured stop in the Columbia River Gorge in Multnomah County, Oregon, offering views of the delicate Bridal Veil Falls, which cascades 120 feet over a basalt cliff into a mossy pool below. The park is located along the Historic Columbia River Highway, one of America's first scenic highways, and provides an accessible waterfall experience in one of the most concentrated waterfall areas in North America.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The moist forest around Bridal Veil Falls supports American dippers that nest behind waterfalls, Pacific wrens singing from the moss-covered logs, and varied thrushes in the forest canopy. The falls provide a humid microclimate that supports unique invertebrate communities. Rough-skinned newts and other amphibians thrive in the spray zone. Red-tailed hawks soar above the gorge, and peregrine falcons have been observed hunting from the cliff faces nearby.

Flora Ecosystems

The spray zone around the falls supports an exceptional community of mosses, ferns, and moisture-loving plants. Maidenhair fern creates delicate green curtains on the cliff faces. The surrounding forest includes Douglas-fir, western hemlock, bigleaf maple, and red alder. Wild ginger, bleeding heart, and other woodland wildflowers bloom in spring. The lush vegetation is nourished by the constant mist from the falls.

Geology

Bridal Veil Falls flows over a cliff of Columbia River Basalt, the massive flood basalt formation that underlies the gorge. The falls are a product of the gorge's unique geology: tributary streams entering the gorge from the south flow over the edge of the basalt plateau, creating the gorge's famous concentration of waterfalls. The Missoula Floods deepened the gorge and created the hanging valleys from which many waterfalls now pour.

Climate And Weather

The western gorge receives 75-85 inches of annual precipitation. The falls area maintains cool, moist conditions year-round due to the spray and the forested canyon setting. Winter brings heavy rain and the falls are most voluminous. Summer provides the most comfortable visiting conditions, though the falls may diminish somewhat.

Human History

Indigenous peoples, including the Multnomah, lived throughout the gorge for millennia. The construction of the Historic Columbia River Highway (1913-1922) was a monumental engineering achievement that opened the gorge to automobile tourism. Bridal Veil Falls was one of the scenic highlights along the highway, and the original viewpoint was designed to frame the waterfall.

Park History

Bridal Veil Falls State Scenic Viewpoint was among the early Oregon state parks developed along the Historic Columbia River Highway. The viewpoint and trails have been maintained and improved over the decades. The park was impacted by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire, which burned thousands of acres in the gorge, though recovery has been substantial.

Major Trails And Attractions

A short trail descends through the forest to a viewpoint at the base of Bridal Veil Falls. A separate trail leads to an overlook above the falls with views of the Columbia River. The waterfall is most impressive during the rainy season from November through May. The park is part of the chain of waterfall viewpoints along the Historic Columbia River Highway, including nearby Latourell Falls and Wahkeena Falls.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Bridal Veil Falls is located along the Historic Columbia River Highway (Highway 30), accessible from Interstate 84 east of Portland. Parking, restrooms, and trails are provided. The Historic Highway connects multiple waterfall viewpoints. The Portland metropolitan area is approximately 30 miles to the west. The site is accessible year-round, though winter ice may occasionally close trails.

Conservation And Sustainability

Recovery from the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire is a major ongoing effort. The fire highlighted the gorge's vulnerability to wildfire, particularly during dry east wind events. Trail restoration, invasive species management following the fire, and reforestation are priorities. The falls ecosystem is resilient, and the natural vegetation has been recovering steadily.
