About Blachly Mountain Forest

Blachly Mountain Forest State Scenic Corridor preserves a stretch of forested landscape in the Coast Range foothills of Lane County, Oregon. The corridor protects the visual and ecological character of the mixed conifer forest visible from the highway near the small community of Blachly. The forest represents the productive Douglas-fir dominated forests that characterize the western slope of Oregon's Coast Range, providing a scenic woodland drive for travelers.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The Coast Range forest along the Blachly Mountain corridor supports typical western Oregon wildlife including Roosevelt elk, black-tailed deer, and black bears. The forest canopy provides habitat for pileated woodpeckers, northern goshawks, and various owl species. Streams through the forest support coastal cutthroat trout and Pacific giant salamanders. The diverse forest structure, with trees of various ages and sizes, supports a wider range of species than the even-aged timber plantations that surround much of the corridor.

Flora Ecosystems

The forest corridor features Douglas-fir as the dominant species, with western hemlock, western red cedar, and bigleaf maple as associates. The lush understory includes sword fern, Oregon grape, salal, and vine maple. Moss and lichen cover tree branches and fallen logs. Red alder lines stream corridors. Spring wildflowers including trillium and fairy bells bloom on the forest floor. The forest represents a relatively mature stand compared to the industrial timber plantations visible on adjacent lands.

Geology

The underlying geology consists of Eocene-age marine sedimentary rocks typical of the Oregon Coast Range. The terrain is steep and dissected by numerous streams. Soils are deep and productive, derived from weathered sedimentary parent materials. The steep topography makes the area susceptible to landslides, which are a natural process that contributes to forest diversity by creating openings of various sizes.

Climate And Weather

The Blachly Mountain area receives heavy precipitation, averaging 60-80 inches annually. Winters are mild and very wet, while summers are warm and relatively dry. The persistent moisture supports the vigorous forest growth that characterizes the Coast Range. Fog and low clouds are common, particularly during the transition seasons.

Human History

The Kalapuya and Siuslaw peoples utilized the Coast Range forests for millennia. Euro-American settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, and logging became the dominant land use. The community of Blachly developed as a timber town. The Coast Range forests have been intensively managed for timber production for over a century, and the scenic corridor preserves one of the few stretches of relatively natural forest in the area.

Park History

Blachly Mountain Forest was designated as a State Scenic Corridor to protect the visual quality of the forested landscape along the highway. The corridor program ensures that the forest character visible from the road is maintained, providing travelers with the experience of driving through a forested landscape rather than past clear-cuts and timber plantations.

Major Trails And Attractions

The scenic drive through the forested corridor is the primary attraction. The corridor provides a glimpse of the productive Coast Range forest ecosystem. Nearby Triangle Lake offers fishing and boating. The corridor connects the Willamette Valley with the central Oregon coast, serving as a scenic route for travelers heading to the beach.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Blachly Mountain Forest State Scenic Corridor is located along the highway near Blachly in Lane County. There are no developed facilities within the corridor. Basic services are available in the small communities along the route, with more comprehensive amenities in Eugene to the east and Florence on the coast to the west.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation of the scenic corridor involves managing the interface between the protected corridor and adjacent industrial forest lands. The corridor provides a visual buffer and ecological refuge within a landscape dominated by timber production. Forest health issues including Swiss needle cast disease in Douglas-fir are monitored. The corridor contributes to wildlife habitat connectivity in the Coast Range.
