About Arcadia Beach

Arcadia Beach State Recreation Site offers one of the most accessible and scenic beach experiences on Oregon's north coast. Located just south of Cannon Beach, this popular day-use area provides easy access to a wide sandy beach framed by dramatic headlands and sea stacks. The beach is beloved by families for its gentle approach and excellent conditions for beach play, while photographers prize the picturesque setting featuring Humbug Point and other coastal formations.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The beach and nearshore waters support abundant marine life including harbor seals, sea lions, and migrating gray whales visible offshore during spring and fall. Shorebirds such as sanderlings, willets, and various plovers forage along the tide line. Brown pelicans and cormorants fish the coastal waters while bald eagles occasionally patrol from above. Tidepools at the beach's edges reveal sea stars, anemones, and hermit crabs.

Flora Ecosystems

Coastal vegetation includes Sitka spruce and shore pine on the headlands, transitioning to beach grass and other salt-tolerant plants near the shore. Native beach plants like sea rocket, sand verbena, and beach morning glory grow in the sandy substrate. The parking area features maintained grass and landscape plantings. The surrounding forest includes western hemlock and red cedar in protected areas.

Geology

The beach is backed by Tertiary-age volcanic and sedimentary rocks that form the dramatic headlands and sea stacks characteristic of this coast. Humbug Point and other rock formations are remnants of more extensive landforms eroded by wave action over thousands of years. The sandy beach is composed of material eroded from coastal cliffs and transported by longshore currents. Winter storms dramatically reshape the beach profile.

Climate And Weather

Arcadia Beach experiences the mild, wet climate typical of the Oregon coast. Summer temperatures average in the low 60s°F with frequent fog, while winter temperatures remain in the mid-40s. Annual precipitation exceeds 80 inches, with most falling between October and May. Coastal winds are common, particularly in summer, while winter storms bring dramatic surf and weather watching opportunities.

Human History

The north Oregon coast has been home to indigenous peoples including the Tillamook and Clatsop for thousands of years. These tribes utilized the abundant marine and forest resources of the region. Euro-American settlement expanded following the Lewis and Clark expedition, with resort development around Cannon Beach beginning in the late 1800s. Arcadia Beach became a popular destination as coastal highways made beach access easier.

Park History

Arcadia Beach became part of Oregon's state park system as coastal recreation sites were established along Highway 101 in the early 20th century. The site was developed with parking and restroom facilities to accommodate growing numbers of beach visitors. Oregon's Beach Bill of 1967 ensured permanent public access to this and other beaches, cementing Arcadia's status as a public treasure.

Major Trails And Attractions

The main attraction is the wide sandy beach, excellent for walking, playing, and beach combing. The dramatic views of Humbug Point and offshore sea stacks provide outstanding photography opportunities. Low tides reveal tidepools along the rocky edges of the beach. The sunset views over the Pacific are particularly spectacular from this west-facing beach.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The recreation site provides a paved parking lot with restroom facilities and easy beach access. Located approximately 3 miles south of Cannon Beach on Highway 101, the site is conveniently accessible for day visitors. No camping is available at this day-use area, but numerous options exist in nearby Cannon Beach and surrounding parks. The site is open year-round from dawn to dusk.

Conservation And Sustainability

Oregon State Parks manages Arcadia Beach to balance recreational access with protection of natural resources. Beach grass restoration and dune stabilization help protect the shoreline. The park participates in coastal cleanup events and marine debris monitoring programs. Visitors are encouraged to observe but not disturb wildlife and to practice Leave No Trace principles.
