Amnicon Falls

Amnicon Falls State Park is a scenic 828-acre natural area located in Douglas County along the shores of Lake Superior in northwestern Wisconsin. The park showcases a series of spectacular waterfalls and rapids along the Amnicon River, which cascades over ancient volcanic rock and sandstone formations. Four named waterfalls grace the river within the park: Upper Falls, Lower Falls, Snake Pit Falls, and Now and Then Falls. The distinctive root beer-colored water, tinted by tannic acid from upstream bogs and swamps, flows over dramatic twenty-foot cascades that can be viewed from a historic covered bridge and nearly two miles of riverside trails. Originally established as Bardon Park by Douglas County in 1932, the area was transferred to state ownership in 1961 and expanded to its current size. Amnicon Falls offers visitors an intimate waterfall experience in a compact, accessible setting that reveals billions of years of geological history.
