About Albert H. Powers Memorial

Albert H. Powers Memorial State Recreation Site is a forested park on the southern Oregon coast in Coos County, preserving a grove of old-growth forest along the South Fork Coquille River. The park is named for Albert H. Powers, a prominent figure in the logging industry who later became an advocate for preserving some of the region's finest forests. The irony of a lumber baron's memorial being an old-growth forest grove speaks to the evolving relationship between the timber industry and conservation.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The old-growth forest and river at Powers Memorial support diverse wildlife. The South Fork Coquille River provides habitat for Chinook salmon, coho salmon, steelhead, and resident cutthroat trout. The massive old-growth trees provide nesting habitat for bald eagles, pileated woodpeckers, and potentially northern spotted owls. Black bears, Roosevelt elk, and black-tailed deer inhabit the forest. The river corridor is home to river otters and American dippers.

Flora Ecosystems

The grove features magnificent old-growth Douglas-fir and Port Orford cedar trees, some exceeding 200 feet in height and several centuries in age. Western hemlock, western red cedar, and bigleaf maple complete the canopy. The understory is lush with sword fern, Oregon grape, and Pacific rhododendron. Mosses and lichens create the cathedral-like atmosphere of the old-growth forest. The grove represents one of the finest remaining examples of the old-growth forests that once covered vast areas of southwestern Oregon.

Geology

The site sits along the South Fork Coquille River in the Klamath Mountains geological province. The rocks include a complex mixture of metamorphic, sedimentary, and volcanic formations spanning hundreds of millions of years. The river has carved its valley through these diverse formations. Alluvial deposits in the valley bottom provide the productive soils that support the impressive forest growth.

Climate And Weather

The Powers area receives heavy precipitation, averaging 60-80 inches annually, with the wettest conditions in the mountains above. The mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers create ideal growing conditions for the massive conifers. The valley setting provides some protection from coastal winds.

Human History

The Coquille and Upper Coquille peoples inhabited the river valleys of this area for thousands of years. Albert Henry Powers (1870-1935) built a logging empire in the Coquille River drainage, and the town of Powers was named for him. The transformation of the area's landscape through industrial logging was profound, making the surviving old-growth groves all the more precious.

Park History

The memorial grove was preserved in honor of Albert H. Powers, with the designation reflecting a growing awareness that the old-growth forests of the region were finite and irreplaceable. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department manages the site to preserve the grove for future generations.

Major Trails And Attractions

Short trails wind through the old-growth grove, allowing visitors to walk among the ancient trees and along the river. The massive size of the Douglas-fir and Port Orford cedar trees is awe-inspiring. The river provides fishing opportunities. The site serves as a starting point for exploring the remote upper Coquille River drainage and the Siskiyou National Forest.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Albert H. Powers Memorial is located near the town of Powers in Coos County, accessible via the Powers Highway from Coquille. The site offers parking and short trails. The small town of Powers provides basic services. More extensive amenities are available in Coquille and Coos Bay.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation focuses on protecting the old-growth forest from threats including wildfire, disease, and unauthorized cutting. Port Orford cedar root disease is a particular concern for the cedar component of the grove. The intact old-growth ecosystem provides irreplaceable habitat for species that depend on large, old trees and the complex forest structures that only develop over centuries. Climate change adds urgency to conservation efforts.
