About Akaka Falls
Akaka Falls State Park is a 65-acre tropical paradise on the northeastern coast of Hawaii Island, approximately 11 miles north of Hilo near the town of Honomu. The park is renowned for its namesake Akaka Falls, which plunges 442 feet into a lush, stream-eroded gorge, making it one of the tallest and most spectacular accessible waterfalls in Hawaii. A well-maintained 0.4-mile loop trail leads visitors through a dense tropical rainforest past bamboo groves, wild orchids, and towering tropical trees to dramatic overlooks of both Akaka Falls and the nearby 300-foot Kahuna Falls. The park's combination of accessible trails, magnificent waterfalls, and lush vegetation makes it one of the Big Island's most popular and photogenic natural attractions.
