About Zacharovanyy Kray
Zacharovanyy Kray National Nature Park, meaning 'Enchanted Land,' is located in Zakarpattia Oblast, western Ukraine, protecting a scenic section of the Volcanic Carpathians. Established on 21 May 2009, the park encompasses approximately 6,101 hectares of volcanic mountain landscapes, dense forests, and thermal mineral springs. [1] Unlike most Ukrainian Carpathian parks that protect flysch sedimentary formations, Zacharovanyy Kray preserves the geologically distinct volcanic mountains of the Velykyi Dil range — the central part of the Vihorlat-Hutyn volcanic ridge — with their characteristic conical peaks and volcanic rock formations that lend the area its enchanted character. [2]
Wildlife Ecosystems
The park's forests support typical Carpathian wildlife including brown bears, wolves, Eurasian lynx, European wildcat, roe deer, wild boar, and the Eurasian beaver in riparian areas. The dense forests provide habitat for rare forest birds including white-backed woodpeckers and Ural owls. Fire salamanders and trout inhabit the moist forest streams. The park's connectivity with the broader Carpathian forest landscape supports populations of large mammals. [1]
Flora Ecosystems
The volcanic substrate creates distinctive growing conditions that differentiate the park's flora from other Carpathian parks. Beech forests dominate at most elevations, including primeval old-growth stands in the wilderness core. The volcanic soils support several plant species uncommon elsewhere in the Ukrainian Carpathians. The Chorne Bahno sphagnum bog supports specialized bog flora. Forest floor vegetation includes rich herb layers with spring wildflowers. Over 500 plant species have been documented. [1]
Geology
The park's volcanic geology sets it apart from most Carpathian protected areas. The Vihorlat-Hutyn mountain range is a chain of Neogene volcanoes that formed 10-15 million years ago, with well-preserved volcanic features including lava flows and volcanic plugs. The volcanic rocks include andesites, rhyolites, and tuffs that create dramatic cliff faces and rock formations, including the Enchanted Valley geological reserve with stone formations up to 100 meters high. [1] The park also contains the Chorne Bahno (Black Bog), the deepest sphagnum bog in the Ukrainian Carpathians at 7 meters depth, and thermal mineral springs emerging along geological faults. [2]
Climate And Weather
The park's climate is moderately continental, moderated by the Carpathian Mountains. Summers average 16-18 degrees Celsius at mid-elevations, while winters average minus 4 to minus 6 degrees Celsius. Annual precipitation of 700-1,000 millimeters supports dense forest vegetation. The volcanic terrain creates microclimatic variation, with south-facing slopes being notably warmer. The thermal springs maintain constant temperatures year-round, creating local warm spots that influence vegetation patterns. [1]
Human History
The volcanic Carpathians have attracted human interest since ancient times, with the thermal springs being used for bathing and healing. The region's multicultural heritage includes Ukrainian, Hungarian, and Slovak influences reflecting centuries of overlapping cultural zones. The forests were managed under the Austro-Hungarian Empire's forest administration. The area's thermal springs developed as modest spa facilities during the Habsburg era. [1]
Park History
Zacharovanyy Kray was established on 21 May 2009 to protect the unique volcanic Carpathian landscape and its associated ecosystems. [1] The designation recognized the geological distinctiveness of the volcanic mountains within the broader Carpathian chain and the need to protect the thermal springs, old-growth beech forests, and sphagnum bog from development and logging. The park is the only Ukrainian nature park founded on volcanic rocks of the Vihorlat-Hutyn ridge. [2]
Major Trails And Attractions
The park offers hiking trails through volcanic landscapes with the distinctive rock formations of the Enchanted Valley geographical reserve, where volcanic stone formations reach up to 100 meters. [1] The thermal mineral springs are a popular attraction, with some accessible for bathing. The Chorne Bahno sphagnum bog, the deepest of its kind in the Ukrainian Carpathians, is a unique natural monument. Forest walks through old-growth beech are atmospheric and peaceful. Mountain trails ascend to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Vihorlat-Hutyn volcanic ridge.
Visitor Facilities And Travel
The park is accessible from towns in Zakarpattia Oblast, with connections to Uzhhorod and Mukachevo. The nearest settlement is Ilnytsia. Visitor facilities include marked trails and basic information points. Accommodation is available in nearby villages. The thermal spring areas have modest facilities for visitors. The park is best visited from May through October for hiking. [1]
Conservation And Sustainability
Conservation focuses on protecting the volcanic geological features from quarrying, maintaining old-growth beech forests, managing the Chorne Bahno sphagnum bog, and overseeing the thermal spring areas sustainably. Logging threats persist in the surrounding forests. The park's unique geological heritage as the only Ukrainian nature park on volcanic rocks of the Vihorlat-Hutyn ridge warrants strong protection. Climate change monitoring addresses potential impacts on forest ecosystems and the sphagnum bog hydrology. [1]
