About Tuzly Lagoons

Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park protects a chain of coastal lagoons, salt lakes, and sandy spits along the Black Sea coast in Odesa Oblast, southern Ukraine, near the border with Romania. Established in 2010, the park encompasses approximately 27,865 hectares of some of the most important coastal wetland habitats in the northwestern Black Sea region. The Tuzly lagoon system, separated from the open sea by narrow sand barriers, creates a gradient of brackish to hypersaline habitats that support exceptional biodiversity and serve as critical staging areas for migratory waterbirds along the Black Sea-Mediterranean flyway.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The park is one of the most important sites for waterbirds in the Black Sea region, with over 270 bird species recorded. Major breeding colonies include Dalmatian pelicans, white pelicans, spoonbills, glossy ibises, and multiple tern and gull species. The lagoons serve as critical stopover habitat for hundreds of thousands of migratory shorebirds and waterfowl. The marine waters support populations of Black Sea turbot, mullet, and gobies, while the lagoons harbor species adapted to varying salinity levels. Bottlenose dolphins frequent the offshore waters. The hypersaline lakes support brine shrimp populations that give some lagoons a distinctive pink coloration.

Flora Ecosystems

The park's vegetation reflects the gradient from marine to terrestrial conditions, with submerged seagrass beds in the lagoons, salt marsh communities on the lagoon margins, and steppe grasslands on the stabilized sand areas. Halophytic species including glasswort, sea lavender, and saltwort dominate the salt flats. The sandy barriers support marram grass, sea holly, and other psammophytic species. The terrestrial margins feature remnant steppe vegetation with feather grasses and seasonal wildflowers. Over 450 plant species have been documented, including several nationally rare coastal and halophytic species.

Geology

The Tuzly lagoon system formed through the progressive growth of coastal sand barriers that enclosed former bays of the Black Sea. Longshore sediment transport, driven by coastal currents and wave action, created the narrow sand spits that now separate the lagoons from the open sea. The lagoons sit on Neogene and Quaternary sedimentary deposits. The varying connectivity between individual lagoons and the sea creates a range of salinity conditions, from nearly fresh to hypersaline, supporting different ecological communities. The system is geologically dynamic, with storm events occasionally breaching the sand barriers and altering the lagoon configuration.

Climate And Weather

The park experiences a warm steppe climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures average 23-25 degrees Celsius with intense solar radiation that drives evaporation and concentrates salinity in the lagoons. Winter temperatures average minus 1 to minus 3 degrees Celsius, with the lagoons rarely freezing completely. Annual precipitation is low at 300-400 millimeters. The warm, dry climate and shallow water depths create conditions for high evaporation, which is the primary driver of the salinity gradient across the lagoon system. Coastal winds play a significant role in wave generation and sediment transport along the shore.

Human History

The coastal lagoons have supported fishing communities for millennia, with ancient Greek settlements established in the vicinity. Salt harvesting from the hypersaline lagoons has been an important economic activity since antiquity, with the salt works remaining locally significant. The region's location at the crossroads of the Ottoman, Russian, and Romanian spheres of influence created a multicultural heritage reflected in place names and traditions. Traditional fishing practices in the lagoons developed specialized techniques adapted to the shallow, brackish waters. The development of the Black Sea coast for tourism and recreation in the Soviet era brought increased human impact to the lagoon system.

Park History

Tuzly Lagoons was established as a National Nature Park in 2010, following years of advocacy by Ukrainian and international conservation organizations. The designation recognized the lagoons' outstanding importance for migratory waterbirds, their role as breeding habitat for rare species including Dalmatian pelicans, and the threats from coastal development, pollution, and changes in water management. The park has been designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and forms part of a network of protected coastal wetlands along the northwestern Black Sea. Transboundary cooperation with Romania's Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve strengthens regional conservation efforts.

Major Trails And Attractions

The park offers birdwatching excursions to observation points overlooking the major lagoons and nesting colonies. During migration seasons, the spectacle of thousands of pelicans, flamingos, and shorebirds congregating in the shallow lagoons is world-class. Walking trails along the sandy barriers between the lagoons and the sea provide access to both marine and lagoon habitats. The distinctive pink lakes, colored by brine shrimp and halophilic bacteria, attract photographers. Boat excursions through the larger lagoons offer closer views of bird colonies and the diverse aquatic habitats.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park is accessible from Odesa and from the town of Tatarbunary. Visitor facilities include observation platforms, marked trails, and an information center. Guided birdwatching tours can be arranged through the park administration. Accommodation is available in nearby towns and rural guesthouses. The coastal terrain is flat and generally accessible, though some areas may be wet or sandy. The best visiting periods are spring and autumn for bird migration, and summer for the spectacular pink lakes and breeding colonies. Sun protection and water are essential, as shade and services are limited.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation challenges include managing the lagoon system's hydrology, which is affected by agricultural water use and climate change, and protecting breeding bird colonies from disturbance. Pollution from agricultural runoff and coastal development threatens water quality. The sand barriers that maintain the lagoon system are vulnerable to erosion and storm damage, and their integrity is essential for the entire ecosystem. The park monitors water quality, bird populations, and lagoon dynamics, contributing data to Black Sea coastal conservation programs. Invasive species management targets non-native fish and plants that could disrupt the lagoon ecosystems.
