About Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar

Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar Regional Park protects a coastal salt flat and dune system at the northern end of the Mar Menor lagoon in Murcia, encompassing approximately 856 hectares of commercial salt pans, Mediterranean scrubland, and pristine sandy beaches. The park occupies the narrow sand spit separating the Mediterranean Sea from the enclosed Mar Menor, creating a unique landscape where salt production, beach dunes, and wetland habitats coexist in a compact coastal strip. The therapeutic mud baths in the salt flats have attracted visitors for health purposes since Roman times.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The salt pans provide crucial breeding habitat for flamingos, avocets, and black-winged stilts, with one of the region's most important waterbird nesting colonies on the salt flat islands protected from ground predators by surrounding water. Kentish plovers nest on the dune margins, while little terns breed on raised sandy areas within the salt flat complex. Audouin's gull and slender-billed gull use the area for feeding.

Flora Ecosystems

Coastal dune vegetation with marram grass, sea holly, and juniper occupies the seaward side, while the salt flat margins support glasswort and other halophytic communities. The Mediterranean scrubland between the salt pans and dunes carries lentisk, fan palm, and esparto grass.

Geology

The park occupies a sand spit formed by longshore sediment transport, with the salt flats in natural depressions enhanced by commercial salt production infrastructure. The Mar Menor side represents the enclosed lagoon created by this coastal barrier formation.

Climate And Weather

Semi-arid Mediterranean climate with less than 300 millimeters of annual rainfall, intense summer heat, and the evaporative conditions that drive commercial salt production.

Human History

Salt production has operated here for over 2,000 years. The therapeutic mud baths have attracted health-seekers since antiquity. The fishing tradition of encañizadas (fish traps) in the Mar Menor channel represents unique local heritage.

Park History

Designated a Regional Park in 1992 to protect the coastal habitats and bird colonies from the intensive tourism development surrounding the Mar Menor.

Major Trails And Attractions

Walking routes along the sand spit between the Mediterranean and the salt pans provide birdwatching, beach access, and views of the working salt flats. The mud baths remain popular. The windmill-dotted landscape is iconic.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Located at San Pedro del Pinatar, approximately 30 minutes from Murcia city. The visitor center provides information about the salt industry and birdlife. Beach access and parking available at several points.

Conservation And Sustainability

Maintaining the commercial salt production that creates and sustains the waterbird habitat is essential for conservation. Visitor management prevents disturbance to nesting colonies. Dune stabilization addresses erosion from foot traffic and development pressure on adjacent land.
