About Vaseux-Bighorn National Wildlife Area
Situated in the picturesque Okanagan Valley 80km south of Kelowna, this 804-hectare reserve protects critical habitat in British Columbia's arid interior. The area's main attraction is the population of California bighorn sheep, best viewed from the wildlife viewing tower along with 30+ other species at risk including Lewis's woodpecker and spotted bat. Six separate units showcase diverse ecosystems from wetlands around Vaseux Lake to grassland terraces with ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir stands. Open for day-use, facilities include a boardwalk trail, parking lot, and information kiosk. The site overlaps with Vaseux Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary and represents an Important Bird Area. Visitors can hike designated trails, photograph unique wildlife, and explore rare plant communities. Perfect for wine country tourists seeking nature experiences, this area offers a different perspective on the Okanagan's natural heritage.
