About Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area
Home to North America's oldest bird sanctuary (established 1887), this massive 10,906-hectare protected area 140km from both Regina and Saskatoon offers prairie wetland experiences unmatched in Canada. The site serves as a critical staging ground for spectacular migrations: up to 50,000 sandhill cranes, 450,000 geese, and hundreds of thousands of ducks traverse between northern breeding grounds and southern wintering areas. Over 300 bird species have been recorded, with more than 100 breeding on site. Visitors enjoy two observation towers, a picnic shelter, self-interpretive trails with floating dock and bird blind, washrooms, and ample parking. Activities include hiking, wildlife viewing, non-motorized boating, sport fishing and hunting (with permits), and cross-country skiing. The combination of historical significance, outstanding biodiversity, and visitor-friendly infrastructure makes this a premier destination for birders and outdoor enthusiasts.
