About Lac Saint-François National Wildlife Area
Just 120km from Montreal on the south shore of Lake Saint-François (a natural widening of the St. Lawrence River), this 1,317-hectare wetland offers unique eco-tourism experiences in southwestern Quebec's farming belt. Recognized by the Ramsar Convention as a Wetland of International Importance, the area consists of 80% wetlands supporting an impressive 287 animal species and 547 plant species. Managed by Les Amis de la Réserve (AMAPRE), visitors can explore the visitor center, participate in guided foot tours and traditional rabaska canoe tours, and enjoy geocaching activities. Open for day-use, the site provides excellent opportunities for wildlife observation, environmental education, and experiencing Quebec's rich wetland biodiversity. The combination of easy accessibility from Montreal, guided interpretive programs, and extraordinary species diversity makes this an ideal destination for families, school groups, and nature enthusiasts seeking authentic wetland exploration close to urban areas.
