Located just 5km from Amherst in Cumberland County, this 432-hectare protected area showcases remarkable biodiversity shaped by unique karst geology and alkaline soils. Over 228 bird species have been recorded, with more than 100 breeding regularly, including some of North America's highest nesting densities of pied-billed grebe. The diverse landscape encompasses cattail marshes, bogs, open-water lakes, mixed forests, and upland fields. Visitors can hike the trail network, observe wildlife including red foxes, snowshoe hares, and northern flying squirrels, and photograph the varied habitats. The area overlaps with Amherst Point Migratory Bird Sanctuary and is part of the Chignecto Ramsar Site, reflecting its international ecological significance. Open for day-use, Chignecto offers accessible trails perfect for casual hikers and families. Common waterfowl like mallards and black ducks are easily spotted, while patient observers may see rarer species like gadwall and wood duck in this ecologically unique Maritime sanctuary.
