About Big Creek National Wildlife Area
On Lake Erie's north shore near Port Rowan, 100km from London, this 770-hectare wetland complex represents the largest sandspit-marsh system in the Great Lakes. Internationally recognized with Ramsar designation and part of the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve, the area hosts tens of thousands of waterfowl during spring and fall migrations. Over 200 bird species have been documented, including endangered king rails and prothonotary warblers. Two units (Big Creek 608ha, Hahn Marsh 162ha) feature extensive undisturbed marshes where water levels are carefully managed to promote plant diversity. Two viewing towers provide excellent observation points along designated trails. The site is open for day-use with seasonal closures during critical migration periods. Perfect for serious birders and photographers, Big Creek offers remarkable wetland biodiversity and the chance to see rare species in one of Ontario's most important coastal habitats.
